I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break. It strikes me how grateful I am to be part of the CEE family - we have fantastic students, faculty, staff and alumni! Thanks to all of you for making my life richer.

Ralph, Wharton

Oldest living SDSM&T alumnus Ralph O'Neill (CE36) recently celebrated his 104th birthday in Custer, SD. SDSM&T President Robert A. Wharton (above left) proclaimed it Ralph O'Neill day on campus, when Mr. O'Neill (above right) came to an ASCE student chapter meeting on Nov. 10th and delighted students, faculty and community members with memories of his long and productive career. South Dakota public radio, two television stations, and the Rapid City Journal (read the story here) attended the event and interviewed Mr. O'Neill. The video of Mr. O'Neill's presentation is available on the CEE webpage: http://cee.sdsmt.edu.

Dr. Jeff Russell, vice provost for lifelong learning and dean of the Division of Continuing Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will discuss effective leadership with the ASCE student chapter on Dec. 1 at 3:00 pm in EP 252. Dr. Russell is also a professor of Civil Engineering, and was chair of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UW-Madison from 2004 to 2011. Everyone is invited to attend.
 

Current undergraduate students have received an e-mail notice at their Mines e-mail accounts that the on-line continuing student scholarship application is now available.  Students have until midnight December 31, 2011 to complete and submit the application after which the application is inactivated until next year. The application must be completed and submitted before the December 31 deadline.  The URL for the application is here.

The enrollment cap on CEE 325 has been increased, so if you're interested in this class and were not able to register earlier, please try again. 

 

We are replacing CEE 358 with CEE 357. For this year only, we will allow CEE 357 to be counted as a department approved elective.
Department news
 

Cliff Reuer, the Technical Assistance Provider at SDLTAP's Western Satellite at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, gave a presentation at the 2011 Safety Conference in Oacoma, SD, on November 17, 2011. The session was entitled "Work Zone Safety."Cliff began his career with the SDDOT in 1970 and worked in construction inspection, billboard/junkyard control, maintenance analyst, and regional traffic operations. From 1994 until he retired in 2009, he served as the SDDOT Traffic & Safety Engineer.

Opportunities for students

 

The 2012 Western South Dakota Hydrology Conference will be held April 19, 2012, at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, and will include a special session on Missouri River issues, a poster session, and an evening social. This email serves as both an abstract call and vendor call for the 2012 conference. The 2012 conference will be sponsored by the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, South Dakota Engineering Society, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, U.S. Geological Survey, and the West Dakota Water Development District. Registration information will be available March 1, 2012, at the conference Web site http://sd.water.usgs.gov/WSDconf/. Professional development hours (or continuing education credits) will be available to interested participants. 

Information for potential speakers and poster presenters: Abstracts for the 2012 Western South Dakota Hydrology Conference will be accepted through February 6, 2012.  Abstracts concerning any earth science topic are welcomed, as are student presentations. Abstracts concerning Missouri River issues are especially welcomed as a special session on this topic is planned. The 2012 conference will include a poster session, so please consider that venue as well.  Please note that if too few abstracts for posters are submitted, the poster session may be cancelled and all proposed posters moved to oral presentations. Please also note that presentation slots are limited. Abstracts received after the February 6 deadline will only be considered for oral presentation if slots are available. If all oral presentation slots are filled, your abstract will only be accepted for the poster session. All speakers and poster presenters will be required to pay conference registration fees unless they have student status. When submitting an abstract to the 2012 conference, please indicate whether oral presentation or poster is preferred.
 

The SDSWMA Scholarship Program, an entity of the South Dakota Solid Waste Management Association (SDSWMA), provides one or more scholarships annually to students with directed studies relating to the protection and enhancement of our natural resources and environment, the solid waste industry and similar fields. Preference is given to South Dakota residents intending to study at South Dakota colleges, universities, vocational training or apprenticeships. An applicant should desire a career in a trade supportive to the protection and enhancement of our natural resources and environment, the solid waste industry and/or related fields. Applicants must intend to enroll for the fall semester. This announcement is also available from the SDSWMA website (www.sdswma.org).
