President's Message

Danny Kushmer

Dear Members,

As I decompress from travelling to Destin for February's State Board meeting I am reminded of how lucky I am to have been chosen as president of the Dick Pope/Polk County Chapter. I am humbled to be surrounded by great PR leaders from around the state all gathered together to conduct the business of FPRA. While I was gone your chapter conducted its monthly board meeting and I wanted to thank President-elect and chapter treasurer Jenny Baker for leading our group in my absence.

The state board meeting was filled with many new and exciting ideas for improving the experience and membership opportunities for all our valued PR practitioners. I would like to take a moment and highlight just a couple.

First, what are you doing on August 4th through the 8th? Hopefully you are making plans to attend the 74th Annual Conference "A Treasure Trove of PR Strategies & Tactics" to be held at the Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village in St. Augustine. This year promises to be more exciting and informative than ever filled with speakers from around the country all sharing their strategies and tactics in order to educate, enlighten and inspire you to do your job better. There are still opportunities (albeit, very few) to showcase your business during the conference. If you or your business is interested in sponsorship send me a note or contact Paul Ramey (conference chair) Assistant Director of Marketing & PR at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville. Paul can be reach at 352-273-2054 or email: pramey@flmnh.uf.edu.

Did you know..... Since 2001, 17 student scholarships have been awarded for a total of $22,500. Since 2008, seven professional members were able to attend Annual Conference for a total of $3,985. And, since 2001, a total of 92 members have received a rebate that assisted them in completing their accreditation, earning the APR designation for a total of $8,465. All from the Florida Public Relations Education Foundation, Inc. (FPRE Foundation) which has been bridging the gap for students and professional members to obtain professional development. This year the FPRE Foundation introduces the "Every Member Annual Campaign" in the hopes of raising $25,000 to ensure that our Foundation continues to grow to meet the needs of our students and our members. More information will follow in the weeks and months to come and I would like to encourage your participation.

For more information on Annual Conference, FPRE Foundation and other great news in PR make sure you read FPRA E-Facts delivered to your inbox each month.

Finally, your chapter was recognized for meeting its MEMBERSHIP GOAL during February's State Board meeting in Destin. Thank you to all that renewed and a special thanks to Jessica Lawson membership chair for her tireless efforts. Remember, a new member orientation will be held on February 28th. For more information please contact Jessica at (863) 646-7722 or email her at: jlawson@lovemyspca.com

Congratulations to Kris Keprios who was recently promoted to the Tourism Sales and Marketing Manager with the Central Florida Visitors and Convention Bureau. Kris has been with organization for nine years in the position of Communications Specialist before receiving this much deserved promotion. He is a graduate of Florida Southern College and started his career as an intern with The Central Florida VCB (known locally as Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing) in 2003. The role of Tourism Sales and Marketing Manager involves developing and overseeing The Central Florida VCB's strategic marketing plan and all advertising, sales and promotions that are done to promote Central Florida's Polk County as a tourism destination throughout the U.S. and internationally. In addition to tourism marketing, Keprios will be charged with overseeing tourism sales initiatives that involve consumer travel shows, group travel, meetings and conventions and other tourism sales initiatives. "Throughout his nine years with us, Kris has produced results, demonstrated leadership and has established critical contacts within the tourism industry," said Central Florida VCB Director, Mark Jackson. Kris served as the DP/PC FPRA President from 2008-2009.

On a side note, The Polk County Board of County Commissioners currently has a Communications Specialist position posted. If you are interested please visit http://polk-county.net/embed.aspx?pg=4.

Florida Southern College is looking for volunteers to sit on a discuss panel for the PR Strategies course in March. The subjects covered, after the professionals' initial overview of what their job entails, would be: 1) how they add value to their organization, 2) how they effectively work with their CEO/boss (helpful hints) and 3) the importance of having communication plans in place.  We would round out the remaining time with questions from the students.  They are a highly energetic, very interested and prepared class and I believe the panel members would enjoy their time with the students. If you are interested in assisting please contact leah.lauderdale@polk-fl.net

2012 Local Image Awards - Deadline March 16th

Five Tips on Preparing FPRA Image Award Entries

  1.  Read the directions. Make sure to address all five elements of the summary: Research, Objectives, Implementation, Evaluation and Budget. Don't try to fake any of them. You must provide valid information on each element.
  2. Track projects throughout the year, not just at awards time. Keep a file for notes, surveys and documentation. It will make compilation that much easier.
  3. Plan ahead to conduct research and document results. It will strengthen your work. Manage by fact. Measure your results.
  4. Put the most work into the summary, not just the notebook. It is 70% of your total score. Be clear, concise and factual, not just creative.
  5. Review the checklist provided in the Call for Entries. Be sure all criteria are met.
