Sprinkler Check!
Each month, this segment will give you tips and advice on the best way to maintain and get the most of your spinkler/irrigation system.
Watering Guidelines for June/July Three times per week, 10 minutes per zone (if you have pop-up heads--contact us for details if you use rotator heads). Tip of the Month! It is very important to have a rain and freeze censor installed on your sprinkler system to avoid wasting water or causing damage to your system on very low temperature days. It is tough to think about freezes right now, but the summer may be the perfect time to make sure your system is updated.
Are you in compliance?
In January 2010, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality declared mandatory the installation of this device in all new irrigation systems.
Need help installing a sensor? Not even sure if your system has one? That's why we're here! Don't forget to check this month's coupon below good for 15% off all sprinkler repairs and updates. And always remember to visit our Irrigation page.

What Are the Best Flowers and Flowering Annuals for our Hot Texas Summer?
The scorching sun that pounds Texas in the summer months can make it extremely challenging--even discouraging--to think about keeping your summer landscape colorful with flowers and other annuals. Well, if you play it smart and make the right plant choices, it's very possible to keep those splashes of color from June to August and beyond.
Dallas County Master Gardner James Hatcher teaches there are 3 key factors to consider when planting summer flowers in Texas:
- Site selection
Will your plant need full sun, part sun or even full shade? Hatcher says that although many plant labels will recommend "full sun," they can benefit greatly from some degree of shade in the afternoon hours.
- Bed preparation
Our clay-heavy Texas soils need a little help to best nourish summer flowers. Hatcher recommends blending in organic matter, such as compost, to make your bed consist of 30 - 50% organic matter. Also consider raising your beds a few inches above the ground to ensure good drainage.
- Choosing the proper plants
The last step is the one you've been waiting for--what plants should you choose??!! Believe it or not, there are many, many flowers that can thrive in the Texas summer if you are careful and smart. The list below is taken from Hatcher's own article and also this link.
Partial list of the best summer annuals for Texas:
Copper Plant, Purslane, Marigold, Periwinkle, Lantana, Verbena, Mexican Firebush, Blue Daze, Pentas, Caladium, Purple Fountain Grass, Larkspur, Sunflower and Texas Lilac.
 | Lantanas are a gorgeous flowering annual that have what it takes to survive Texas summers. |
