D'Var HaMenahel - A Word From Rabbi Saposh

Next Thursday night, June 23, we will hold our Annual Graduation Exercises and formal Promotion Ceremony of each of our students, Grades 1-6.  The evening's program will include reflections and a musical duet by our 8th graders, Eric and Eli, as well as their slide show, singing, and an array of highlights of what has been a most successful 2010-2011 school year.  We hope and expect that every Schechter family will join us and participate in what is clearly a celebration of our community and a recognition of the meaningfulness and the excellence of our school.

In this season of graduations (our Kindergarten students "moved up" just yesterday at a wonderful simcha enjoyed by family and friends), it is wonderful to proudly share again that the top three high school graduates of our sister school in West Orange, the Golda Och Academy, were all SSDSRV 2007 alumni.   Daniel Listwa, Scott Greenberg and Oren Fliegelman (attending respectively Columbia, Yale and Princeton) grabbed these honors, a powerful reflection of the extraordinary education we deliver to our students year in and year out.

I look forward to greeting you next Thursday as we celebrate our graduates, our students and our SSDSRV community and families.

Shabbat Shalom

Rabbi Stuart Saposh, Head of School

A Special Visitor

The 5th grade and Mrs. Barnett wish to thank Dr. Arel Weisberg (Becky's father) for his presentation on the use of the spectroscopy in current technology. Dr. Weisberg was able to show the students the real world connection to their studies in science.

Celebrate Israel Parade
On Sunday, June 5, our students and their families marched up 5th Avenue in Manhattan to show their support and love for Israel.  The weather and spirit were great!

Todah rabbah to all the participants and to staff members who shared this  wonderful afternoon.  We hope you will join us next year!

2011-2012 School Calendar

We have finalized our calendar for the 2011-2012 school year.  Please click here for a copy.  A ten-month version, with the dates of annual programs and presentations will be circulated in the summer.

Baccalaureate Service, Promotion and Graduation
Please join us on Wednesday, June 22 at approximately 9:20am for our Baccalaureate Service.  At that time, we will present awards to many individuals who have helped our school over the year.

The promotion of our 1st-6th graders to the next grade will take place at our school graduation on Thursday evening, June 23, beginning at 7 pm. We hope that as many students and parents as is possible can attend.

The entire ceremony will last one hour followed by refreshments.

Welcoming New Families
We are organizing our Chaverim Program for this coming summer, matching current Schechter families with incoming families to help our new parents and children learn about our school. The families meet over the summer and stay in touch throughout the first year to help the newcomers settle in.

Being a Chaver family for a new school family is an easy way to help the school and build our community.

If you would be available to help coordinate this program or you would like to be a chaver to a new family in our school, please contact Gail Burnett at 732 238-7971 (x102) or burnettg@ssdsrv.org

A Slam-Dunk Celebration
Please save the date -- September 16 from 4pm-6pm at EBJC
EBJC will be honoring Irwin Steinlight for his 30 years of service to our youth in the Jewish community.

In addition to serving the EBJC community, Irwin has made a very positive and signficant effect on our basketball team -- our Schechter Shooters.  He has instilled in numerous students the gift of good sportsmanship, respect and self-control.  Please try to keep this date open!  Everyone is invited!  Additional detail to follow.

If you have any video/photos of previous games or events, please forward to the EBJC office.

After School Fun - A Message From Lisa Seidman
Please remember that all After School Fun classes ended this week except for the following makeup classes during the last week of school:

Mon, June 20 - Knitting

Tues, June 21 - Knitting

Wed, June 22 - Art Studio

I want to thank my dedicated committee for all of their hard work to bring you another successful year of After School Fun:  Lara Weisberg,
Laura Waksman, Taryn Webber and Sue Kamens.

The After School Fun Program is not possible without parent volunteers. Some of us will be working on other school projects next year so we need additional volunteers to help run the After School Fun Program.  All of the planning is done by phone and email and does not require you to be at school during the day.  Please advise Rabbi Saposh (saposhs@ssdsrv.org) know if you can help.

Have a great summer!
