 Schools, Districts, Communities - Grow Your STEM Plans at our Fall Meetings!   

 

In follow-up to the May 2012 Expo, this fall the SE MA STEM Network is reconvening our school district and community teams. The meetings will provide updates on SE MA progress since the Expo, provide examples of model programs, and connect attendees with resources to ramp up STEM activities in their schools and communities. Resources from the SE MA Network that will be launched at the meetings include our Corporate Partners program, career exploration website, STEM resource directory, and technical assistance services.

    Finding the SE MA Network at the Oct. 18 STEM Summit 

     

    Join the SE MA STEM Network for continental breakfast at 8AM in the Red Level Super Suite for a "SE MA STEM Network Pre-Summit Meeting." Learn about the resources our Network has to offer and our plans for the coming year. When you arrive for check-in, inform the volunteers that you plan to attend the SE MA STEM Network Pre-Summit Meeting so that they can direct you appropriately.   Registration for the Summit has been closed at 1,000 attendees.     Defining College and Career Readiness
    The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education are seeking feedback from educators, parents, students, communities, employers, workers, and the general public on a DRAFT definition for Massachusetts on what it means to be College and Career Ready. The goal is to capture the broadest possible feedback while arriving at a definition that is clear, reflects our commonwealth's educational goals and values, and is workable for stakeholders. To contribute your input go to: Survey Link. Deadline: October 31, 2012, 5PM. 
    October 18: Statewide STEM Summit at Gillette Stadium
    As noted above, registration for the STEM Summit is full; however, additional sponsorships will allow conference organizers to admit people from the waiting list. Sponsorship levels range from $2,000-$7,000. For additional information and to discuss your organization's participation, please contact J.     News and Events from the Region
    Seeing Stars (and Planets) 
    Built as part of the recently erected Science Facility on Bridgewater State University's campus, the BSU Observatory is open to the public every Wednesday (weather permitting) through the fall semester.
    • On October 10, 17 and 24, the Observatory will be open from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
    • On November 7, 14, and 28, and December 5 and 12, the Observatory will be open from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm.

    To learn more about the BSU Observatory, including information regarding Wednesday Public Viewing, please visit the Observatory's website. Check an hour before each viewing session on Facebook, Twitter, or by calling the observatory hotline at 508-531-DARK to confirm whether the event will take place.

    Business Innovation in Medical Diagnostics

    The Southern New England Entrepreneurs Forum is teaming up with the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center to present a case study of the fast-moving field of medical diagnostics. CarePoint Solutions is engaged in the business of manufacturing and supplying "controls" for measuring the accuracy of medical diagnostic instruments. Presenters include Bill Donohue, President and CEO of CarePoint Solutions, Dr. Steve Bogen, Medical Director, Clinical Chemistry at Tufts Medical Center and Dr. Robert Cody, Dean of Science, Technology, Mathematics and Business at Cape Cod Community College.  For more information or to register, visit http://www.sneef.org/ .

    GSEM Career Expo - Call for Volunteers
    Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is hosting a Teen Career Expo on Sunday, October 28 in Framingham. This expo, entitled "Changing the World Through STEM" will be open to girls, grades 6 through 12, from all of Eastern Massachusetts (including the Cape and Islands). GSEM is looking for volunteers to help at the Career Expo, with several different categories to volunteer in: Mentor, Workshop Facilitator, Trade Show Business Partner, Trade Show and Higher Learning.     Mass Life Sciences Center Funding and
    Tax Incentive Programs

    MLSC's Capital Program:  Equipment and Supplies for High Schools will enable the purchase of equipment and supplies to train students in life sciences technology and research, particularly programs supporting a trained workforce suitable for lab technician work, biomanufacturing, and other segments of the life sciences as well as the education of students wishing to pursue advanced degrees in STEM subjects. Eligible organizations are Massachusetts Voc-Tech high schools, comprehensive public high schools with approved voc/tech programs; a public High School located in a "Gateway City," or a community-based non-profit organization serving the eligible high schools. Applications may be for up to $250,000. Applications are due on October 12, 2012 at noon through the MLSC website.
     

    Internship Challenge 

     

    MLSC'sTax Incentive Program invests in job creation by offering tax incentives to growing companies engaged in life sciences research and development (R&D), commercialization and manufacturing in Massachusetts. Applicants are generally companies that have transitioned or are transitioning from pure life sciences R&D to commercialization and manufacturing. An information session will be held in Waltham on October 10. To learn more about the program or submit an application, visit the MLSC's website. The deadline is October 25, 2012 at noon.

    Zephyr Marine Education Foundation Cruises

    The Zephyr Marine Education Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing hands-on marine science education and awareness, hosts science education-based cruises in Vineyard Sound. With activities ranging from collecting invertebrates to analyzing underwater live-feed videos, students grades 6 and up will be exposed to exciting and fun practices in the Marine Science field. Students will also visit Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and discuss potential career paths and opportunities in Marine Science.     BCC's SAGE Lending Lab, the Next Generation Science Standards and New Teacher Evaluation 
    Webinar:  Tuesday, October 16, 2012
