Regional Fall Network Event
Full house explores educator-employer relationships
 | |
Attendees at the regional STEM network event in Foxboro share collective brainpower to generate ideas for regional STEM efforts.
|
Gillette Stadium's meeting space overflowed with a sold out crowd of more than 140 enthusiastic STEM supporters at the regional network's fall meeting November 2 in Foxboro.
From education to industry, people focused with excitement on the event's goal of exploring how educators and employers can work together to promote STEM achievement and interest in our region's students.
Mentoring and job shadowing, the role of classroom volunteers, and the need for more networking and matchmaking were just a few of the areas where participants shared ideas, needs, and what-ifs.
"The great news is that all of these are planned future activities for the SE MA STEM Network!" said Kathleen Kirby, CONNECT executive director and STEM network coordinator

Just Say WOW for STEM New state program unveiled at statewide summit showcases real lives, real STEM careers
 | | "...encouraging more students to study STEM fields will have a catalytic effect on Massachusetts' future workforce...." |
At the October STEM Summit in Newton, Lt. Governor Timothy Murray launched the "WOW Initiative," a statewide public awareness campaign designed to engage, educate, and "wow" Massachusetts students into realizing the opportunities in STEM careers. "The benefits of encouraging more students to study STEM fields will have a catalytic effect on Massachusetts' future workforce, jobs and the economy," said Murray. "By raising greater awareness today through the 'WOW Initiative,' we are developing a pipeline of talented future employees in a range of innovative careers in Massachusetts." Summit attendees got a sneak peek of the first in the series of videos, which encourage students to pursue STEM by showcasing 15 "wow" careers using science, technology, engineering, and math skills. Profiles include Bill James, Red Sox statistician; Nigel Jacobs, emerging technology advisor to Boston's Mayor Menino; Mikell Taylor, systems engineer, Bluefin Robotics; Jim Toepel, video game designer, Harmonix Music Systems; and Amy Kukulya, ocean researcher, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
