Having just returned from Maine, the stately lighthouses we visited along the coast are fresh in my memory. For a Californian it was like re-entering winter in June with the foggy mist and intermittent rain showers hiding the land from the sea. Seeing firsthand the limited visibility, I realized how important these lighthouses were for ships coming into their harbors. Sharp granite cliffs would be the dreaded doom of any ship that failed to heed the warning. Those lighthouses, manned by lonely, committed watchmen, saved the lives of many sea-farers.
As we watch God at work in Scripture, He is never sleeping, never disconnected from His creation, always actively fulfilling His purposes. As God's people, we have God-given purpose as well. As the lighthouse was designed to warn, we are designed to spread our God-given light so that people He loves are kept from an eternity without Him.
Everything we do as women has God-given significance that reaps eternal rewards, whether it is living out our faith among our families, on the job, in our communities or in far-away lands. We are the watchmen in those towers, letting the light of our life shine to help ships find the harbor. God has called us to lives of purpose, to be women who are on mission, making eternal differences for many.
"You are light in the Lord, walk as children of light." Eph. 5:8
