Gorge Girls U18 Gold team - Silver Medalists!
"Such a rewarding experience and a pleasure to have such a great group of players this year and especially at the BC Championship Tournament this past July 5-8th weekend in Kelowna where this dedicated team worked so hard right to the last whistle! After finishing their group first we qualified for the final, with first or second on the line this team played their hearts out and left everything on the pitch with the game ending 2-1 in extra time for this team first loss ever in their two trips to the BC's. Gold in our hearts but with a tinge of Silver. Great times and stories for another day with experiences to last a lifetime. Well done ladies...you made us all so very proud!!"

Saanich Fusion Boys U18 Gold team - 6th Place Finish

SFFC BGU18 found ourselves in the third final playing against Terrace for 5th and 6th place. The two teams were evenly matched. In the dying seconds of the game, losing 2-1, we were awarded a penalty kick due to a Terrace hand ball. The referee informed the teams that the game would end with the penalty shot; there would be no chance for a rebound. The Terrace goal post denied our opportunity to play into extra time! A special shout out to two BGU17 players who joined our team for the Provincial B Cup: Tom Lee from SFFC and Mitch Wilson from Gorge. We were proud to accept the 'Fair Play Team Award' at U18. Thanks to our sponsor and Saanich Fusion Football Club for your support and assistance. Thanks to Aldergrove YSA and BC Soccer for putting on a well organised tournament.
Bodo von Schilling, Head Coach

Go Canada Go! |
Lots of us will be cheering for Canada at the Olympics but we should also be cheering for Emily Zurrer. Emily Zurrer, a former Cowichan Valley and Lower Island Soccer Association Metro player was recently selected to the squad.
I like to think that her participation in club and association programs helped expose her to the dream of making the national team but also exposed her to bigger and better opportunities as her skills allowed.
For this reason we counsel our coaches away from focusing on winning as a measure of success. Recently only 1 of our 9 BC Soccer Premier League teams (formally called HPL) made the playoffs. Some soccer bloggers suggested we might not be happy with our performance but on the contrary we are elated and here's why.
Last season LISA teams played in the Metro/Select and Super Y League in conjunction with Upper Island. Through those programs we had two players make the provincial program. However this year we have nine players making the same provincial teams (7 lower island and 2 upper island). We consider this an enormous achievement and are proud of the success of our teams and players. We will still celebrate wins if we get them but I know the 100+ teammates of these nine athletes now think making the provincial team is a reality for them and after that the sky's the limit.

Must read for parents and coaches of Mini Players |
The FA (English Football) are working on changes to their youth system.
Key items they believe will improve enjoyment at Mini Soccer:
- Use the half way line for the opposition to drop off to so teams can play out from the back
- Introduce optional four quarters instead of mandatory two halves
- Introduce optional roll-ins or throw-ins
- Best practice recommendation of a 'minimum 50% playing time' for every child.
- Prohibit 8-month long seasons for U7-U11 children
You can compare LISA with the FA in the attached final document More and Better Players Through Child Friendly Football
