Congratulations to all Island teams who competed in the Provincials

Congratulations to the U14 Girls Gold Peninsula Comets for their inspiring first place finish at the BC Soccer Youth Provincial B-Cup Tournament hosted in Penticton.

The Comets finished first in their pool after going undefeated in the preliminary round against some tough competition from Terrace, Penticton and Kelowna.  The final saw the Comets edge out a talented Coquitlam Metro Ford team by a score of 2-0 to earn the gold medal and this year's honour as provincial champions. Well done girls!

Football Fact

How was the name soccer created?

The name association football was created to distinguish the game from the other versions of football played at the time, such as rugby football. The word soccer is a colloquial abbreviation of association (from assoc.) and first appeared in the 1880s.  The word is sometimes credited to Charles Wreford Brown, an Oxford University student said to have been fond of shortening words such as rugger for rugby football or soccer for Associaton Football
