Greetings!

Question of the month- (There is a reward for the correct answer)  What year was NKBA founded and under what name was it known? The first to email me with the correct answers will receive a $10 Peets Coffee gift card at the next meeting. (Non-board members please-we all should know this.)

(The answer to last month's question "Who invented refrigeration and what year?" is William Cullen in 1748.  Sub-Zero did not exist then, although sub zero temperatures did.)

KBIS, baby! As I prepare for the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago on April 22, I am struck with how great our industry is. We are a formidable and diverse conglomeration of professionals who bring together an alarming number of personal talents and gifts from the most creative to the most detail oriented and every other personality in between. When the sales mentors give the proverbial "how to sell to varying personalities" test to a group of kitchen and bath experts, to no one's surprise, the room is full of all the different personalities and sometimes in great abundance. We are all different, that is what makes us great.

I enjoy KBIS for its vastness of booths and educational seminars. However, I most enjoy getting together with long-time friends in the industry that I only see once a year to catch up on life and to discuss, be it ever so brief, the challenges and rewards of our industry.   This year will be no different. From my days on the National Board for NKBA and from my previous experiences of working the show for many years, I have derived the greatest benefit being an NKBA member from the personal associations and friends I have gathered through the years. You cannot gain this from not belonging to or becoming involved with this great association or just from working the show with a company. It is this that keeps me exhilarated with youthful energy (ok, stop laughing) and excitement for our industry, especially, for those just entering it.

NKBA continues to grow and represent all the members of the kitchen and bath industry. Our chapter is growing, as well. Attendance at the first two meetings of 2012 is up over last year by a substantial amount. As a board, we will continue to work hard in bringing you, the members, effective and substantive programs. If you have any brilliant suggestions, please feel free to contact any board members. I love to hear from our members to find out what I, we, can be doing more for you.

For our Willamette Valley and Southern Oregon members, keep an eye out for a chapter meeting for you in the Eugene area this year!

Let's continue to build a great chapter!

Member Spotlight
Kirstin Havnaer, AKBD, MBA
Each month we're going to be highlighting a chapter member and we decided to start by introducing our board members.

  kirstin

Kirstin Havnaer is our VP Technology & Communications (year #2) and is the owner of Hearthstone Interior Design, LLC. She has also served as our VP Membership in 2010. We sat down to interview her about a few things...

Q: Tell us about your education and training.
Kirstin: I have a BA from the University of Washington in Psychology and an MBA from Portland State University. I've also done extensive studies with the Western School of Feng Shui and the International Association of Color Consultants.
Q: How did you get started in this industry and how long have you been in it?
Kirstin: I will have been in the industry for 10 years this May and it really started by accident. As I finished my MBA I was pregnant with my first son. Knowing that I'd have a sizable hole in my resume while we started a family, I began to look for ways to work out of the home and be my own boss. The appeal of going back into the corporate business world, at this point, had lost its luster and I needed something to nurture my creative side. My real estate agent had always told me I should go in to interior design... to which I always rolled my eyes. But after pursuing more education in design and feng shui I thought I'd give it a shot. Guess it was a good move on my part because I'm still here!
Q: What was your first "career" job?
Kirstin: I worked for many years on the logistics side of the healthcare industry managing budgets, running TQM processes (Total Quality Management), implementing operational cost saving strategies, and dealing with unionized labor and staffing.
Q: Who are your industry heroes?
Kirstin: Not sure about the term 'heroes' exactly, but I've always enjoyed the work of Candice Olson. My mentors tend to relate more to the business aspect of working in the remodeling industry and I would have to say that Greg Olson (Olson & Jones) has been amazing in that respect.
Q: What's the best business advice you've ever received?
Kirstin:  "Say 'yes' first and then panic second, otherwise you'll miss out on great opportunities."
Q: What do you hope to accomplish in 2012?
Kirstin: Some of my goals this year include re-vamping my website for SEO optimization, narrowing my focus on working with only top-notch contractors, and saying 'no' to the types of situations that I know will not be fruitful. May not sound like much, but for those of you 'yes-men' and 'yes-women' out there, you know how tough that can be! Am I right?
Q: What's your favorite quote?
Kirstin: "Tact is for those who aren't witty enough to be sarcastic."
Q: When you were in grade school, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Kirstin: Hands down - a professional ballerina. I studied ballet from the time I was five until I turned seventeen. While it taught me so many valuable life lessons (that I still use to this day) about discipline and grace under pressure, I finally realized how much partying I was missing out on in high school. So I left it for the college track instead.
Q: What's in your CD player right now?
Kirstin:  It's more like what's NOT in my CD player right now! I have such a vast appreciation for music from classical to grunge to blues to rock to rap and everything in between. I think that I've got Maroon 5 on permanent repeat at the moment because my kids and I are huge fans of NBC's 'The Voice'.
Q: What's the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?
Kirstin:   It varies from "Am I Bill Murray and is this Groundhog's Day?" to "If I only had one more hour of sleep..."
CEU Reporting Guidelines
Spencer Hinkle, CKD
VP Professional Development
hinkle96@gmail.com

How exactly are CEU's submitted?...

Each certified member (AKBD, CKD, CBD, etc.) must submit their own CEU's. Here are the instructions on how to do so online:

1. Go to www.nkba.org and log in with your member number and password.

2. Click on your name at the top of the page or on 'Member Center' in the menu column on the left-hand side of the page.

3. When your account page appears, click on 'CEU's' on the right side of the page.

4. From there, your CEU page will appear and you just follow the directions to enter the information about the event you attended.

5. You'll need the following information: date and title of the class, a brief description, the presenter name, the length of program (in hours), location, and type of program.

 6. NOTE: All chapter meetings are worth .1 CEU, so be sure to record them monthly after you attend!

On your CEU page if you notice a 'pending' notation for anything from 2011, please contact Helen Conroy at NKBA to resolve any issues with your submission.

If there is a "pending" notification for any entry in 2012, chances are that you most likely hit the submit button more than once or the system responded incorrectly. If this is the case, you should re-enter the submission and most likely it will take. If it doesn't, then contact Helen Conroy.

We're looking forward to seeing you on May 17th at FloForm. Thanks for your continued participation and support.

Sincerely,

2012 NKBA Columbia River Board
