Greetings!
Spring is coming... or at least it is supposed to at some point. Spring is a time for new life to blossom from the dreariness of winter. I see a new life in our industry for 2012. Through the weather and home show time of the year, we're continuing to see an increase in activity for projects beyond just flooring, countertops or backsplashes. KBIS in Chicago will have it all. The largest kitchen and bath industry show on earth will be held April 24 through 26 at McCormick Place in the Windy City. I will be there along with many other NKBA chapter officers from around the country to partake in the educational seminars, NKBA member events, hitting the showroom floor, and conducting business with industry cohorts. It will be a time to view new products and renew old friendships. For more information navigate to www.kbis.com. Many of you are busy, some are very busy. From some I hear the anxiety of being pushed to personal capacity yet again. To lessen some of this burden, why not enlist the assistance of an intern this spring from our NKBA endorsed college programs at PCC-Sylvania and PCC-Rock Creek? Both campuses have great talent just waiting for their opportunity to experience all that our industry has to offer. Don't overthink this, discuss with our own Sharon Olsen, Spencer Hinkle, or Robin Fisher about who might be the best fit for you. Who knows? These students may one day become your business associates. And lastly, I am offering a $5 Starbucks gift card for the first non-board member who sends me an email at randykrebs@gmail.com and answers the following question correctly - Who first invented refrigeration and in what year? (HINT- despite our great meeting at BASCO, it was not the founder of Sub-Zero.) At your service,
Randy Krebs, President

Member Spotlight - Spencer Hinkle
 | |
Spencer Hinkle, CKD
|
Each month we're going to be highlighting a chapter member and we decided to start by introducing our newest board members.
Spencer Hinkle is our new VP Professional Development and is an educator at PCC. We sat down to interview him about a few things.
Q: Tell us about your education and training. Spencer: I have a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Florida, an Associates of Applied Science in Building Construction from Portland Community College, I am an NKBA Certified Kitchen Designer and a BPI Certified Building Analyst.
Q: How did you get started in this industry and how long have you been in it?
Spencer: My father was a woodworker, and although working with him was challenging, his love of the craft somehow rubbed off on me. After moving to Portland in 1978 I went through the Building Construction program at PCC, and in 1980 went to work as a carpenter/cabinetmaker for master woodworker Melvin Koester. In 1982 I formed a partnership and "Hinkle and Son's Fine Woodworking" was born. The company was sold in 1992 and I went to work as Regional Sales Manager for Design Craft Door. In 1994 I took a full time teaching position at Portland Community College.
Q: What was your first "career" job?
Spencer: I was a carpenter/cabinetmaker
Q: Who are your industry heroes?
Spencer: Phillip Johnson, Mick D'Giglio and Louis I Kahn Q: What's the best business advice you've ever received?
Spencer: My first employer told me to avoid hiring employees for as long as possible, which I did not heed, but soon found out was good advice!
Q: What do you hope to accomplish in 2012?
Spencer: To retire from teaching and launch a music/video production company.
Q: If you were to perform in the circus, what would you do?
Spencer: A trained dog and monkey act...
Q: What's currently your favorite song or band?
Spencer: Marcio Faraco (Brazilian)
Q: If you were given 24 hours to live, what would you do?
Spencer: Say good-bye to my family and friends, make sure they know I love them, followed by sharing a case of '74 Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Saganaki, and a fresh baked french baguette.
Q: Tell us something that nobody in this organization knows about you.Spencer: I played drums for Chuck Berry.

Where will YOU be June 21st-24th?? You could be doing this:
Imagine yourself under the warm, sunny skies of Central Oregon roaring down the Deschutes or indulging your creative side in the fascinating shapes and colors of original painted pottery. You could also discover a beautiful Alpaca farm kicking back with a glass of wine or lose yourself in a round of golf.
Sound too good to be true? It's not! All this and more awaits you at BUILD 2012. Don't wait too long to register though, we are nearing 50% capacity and are expected to sell out. Only $175 through April 30th or $195 from May 1 - June 5 (or when the event sells out).
Interested in sponsoring? There's still time. We have about 90% of our sponsors in place. Where else will you meet and interact with your business peers (new and established) and have fun at the same time?
Will there be any CEU classes? YES!!

2011 Annual Report
VP Technology & Communications
The 2011 version of our chapter Annual Report is now available. We won many accolades from members across our region and from the NKBA national board as a "best business practice" with the format which we developed for our 2010 fiscal year. You can learn about the history of our chapter, our strategic plan (and how much of it we've already implemented), our financial standing, and many other fascinating tidbits. And you can be amongst the first to read it by clicking here.

Legislative Update
VP Government Relations
The official status report has been published regarding ORS 1521. The bill titled "Commercial Interior Design" failed in committee upon adjournment. Again, I want to thank all of those who wrote letters and sent emails stating their opposition to any legislation that seeks to restrict the practice of interior design. It is also important that the bill introduced in Washington State also failed to come out of committee.
Legislative activity does continue around the country and is constantly being monitored by Ed Nagorsky, Legal Counsel for NKBA. Currently in Illinois, the Illinois Supreme Court has issued a ruling changing the terms of payment on liens to place the lenders as primary recipient. In California, a new bill has been submitted to create a new board controlling Registered Interior Design and redefines the practice of interior design, the requirements for registration (including the number of hours of required work experience under the supervision of a Registered Interior Designer), and the education and the passing of the NCIDQ examination.
I will continue to stay informed about legislative activity in Oregon and Washington that will directly affect members of our chapter. If you are interested in helping by joining our Government Relations Committee, or in giving your time to write letters or testify if needed in Salem, please talk to me at a meeting or contact me. It is important that all of us stay involved.
