Greetings!

I'm writing this from my landing spot at the Portland Spring Home & Garden Show where the foot traffic has been very good this year and the vendor members I spoke with are pleased with the turnout (and potential business) to be garnered from it. The NKBA Columbia River Chapter booth presented not only our chapter but the association in a very positive light at the show. We had many people stop by the booth allowing our volunteers to engage them about this great association and you, the local chapter. I want to thank all of the designers, vendors, and student members who worked the booth during the show and, especially, Kirstin Havnaer, Glenda McAdam, Aaron Nudelman, Spencer Hinkle, and Troy McCartney for planning and constructing the booth this year. Head to our chapter Facebook page to see photos of the beautiful job they did!

Should you, the chapter members, decide that the chapter should be a participant in the 2013 show, we will be needing a home show chairperson and committee outside of our current board members to start planning in the next few months. Please call or email me if you would like to participate.

On Monday, February 13th, the Oregon Senate had a hearing regarding the bill proposing design legislation in the state of Oregon. Due to the overwhelming and compelling testimony from NKBA members, the AIA, and the food services industry, the bill has been tabled until next session with many questions from the Senate committee members still to be answered. As I've said many times before... bills do not necessarily die, they just lay dormant. This bill will be back in another format next year, rest assured. See Dorothy Harter's article below for more details.

And last, but not least, I would like to thank Kaye Powell and the entire staff at Chown Hardware for hosting our February meeting and providing great educational experiences for us all.
You can view some great photos of the event taken by Nancy Foster on our chapter Facebook page.

Member Spotlight - Azla Harrington
Azla HarringtonEach month we're going to be highlighting a chapter member and we decided to start by introducing our newest board members.

Azla Harrington is our new Secretary for 2012 and works at Craftsman Design & Renovation  as a designer. We sat down to interview her about a few things.

Q: Tell us about your education and training.
Azla: I have a B.A. in Finance & Econ from the University of Puget Sound and an Associates from PCC in Design/Build/Remodel. PCC has an excellent NKBA accredited program that not only incorporates design but requires an extensive amount of hands-on construction classes - from floor, wall and roof framing to interior/exterior finish to cabinet construction. I wore a tool belt for two years! I think it's important for all designers to have an intimate understanding of how a home is actually constructed before they can begin to make it pretty.
Q: How did you get started in the design business and how long have you been doing it?
Azla: I've always loved architecture and design so when I decided to go back to work after having my son, Jack, it was obvious which industry I wanted to be in. As a single mom of a 2-year-old it wasn't easy starting all over but I'm so glad I did. I graduated last term and started work at Craftsman Design & Renovation the same week. I've officially been a designer for 3 months now.
Q: What was your first "career" job?
Azla: My first job out of school was at Deloitte & Touche as a risk management consultant. Not the most creative job in the world. Even though I ended up staying in that industry for 6 years I knew pretty quickly that it wasn't the right fit for me. I'm glad I had that corporate experience but I'm even happier that I'm not doing it any longer.
Q: What's the best business advice you've ever received?
Azla: A few years ago when I was a student at PCC I was walking around one of Portland's home shows and a designer started telling me about this experience. I specifically remember him saying, "Kitchen/bath design is 5% design and 95% organization." I'm realizing 3 months into my own career that he definitely had a point.
Q: What do you hope to accomplish in 2012?
Azla: To pass my AKBD exam!!!
Q: If you could have any job in the world, which one would you want?
Azla: Not to sound cheesy, but most likely the one I have - or being a full-time mommy. Lucky for me I get to do both part-time.
Q: If you were in the Miss America pageant what would your talent be?
Azla:
Making grilled cheese sandwiches. My 4-year-old son, Jack, says I make the best ones in the whole world!
Q: What's your favorite quote?
Azla: "Arrange whatever pieces come your way." -Virginia Woolf
Q: What's your biggest pet peeve?
Azla: Loud popcorn chewers at the movies theater...

Legislative Update
Dorothy Harter, CKD, CBD
2012 Chapter VP - Government Relations

Once again, the design legislation introduced in Oregon failed to leave committee. Senate Bill 1521 was introduced by IDC-Oregon seeking a practice act legislating commercial interior design. A special hearing was held on Monday, 2/13 before the Senate General Government's Consumer & Small Business Protection Committee. Testimony in opposition of this bill was given by representatives from the American Lighting Association, Food Service Equipment Association, American Institute of Architects, Interior Design Protection Council, the County Commissioner, and members of our own NKBA chapter.

Ed Nagorsky, Legal Counsel for NKBA, flew in from Hackettstown, NJ to attend the hearing with Chapter Board officers and members. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and a special thanks to Diane Plesset, CMKBD and Robin Fisher, CMKBD for their testimonies.

We also appreciate everyone who wrote to the Senate committee members stating their opposition to SB1521. NKBA will continue to monitor legislative activity around the country to protect the interest of our membership. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me or speak to me at the next chapter meeting.
