Greetings!
Through rain, sleet, slush, and snow!! No, not the post office, but your 2012 Chapter Officers! In the midst of the worst ice storm that the Seattle area has seen in years, if not ever, the Columbia River Chapter officers made their way to the NKBA Region 9 Chapter Officer training in Tukwila, Washington on January 19 and 20. Although, the adventure had its interesting, if not traumatic moments, the session was well worth the effort as we learned much from our sister chapters in our Region. Chapter officers from the BC Chapter and Puget Sound Chapter gathered with us to engage in a day of training that included individual position breakout sessions to share ideas and best practices. Paula Kennedy, the NKBA Region 9 Director, developed an excellent presentation to build us up as we undertake the task of bringing great value to you, our members, in 2012. And, as a board, we are committed to accomplishing much this year. In other news... Curious to know what happened in 2011 in the Columbia River Chapter? Watch for the the 2011 Annual Report which will be published later this month! At your service, Randy Krebs, President

Q: How did you get started in the design business and how long have you been doing it? Kate: I started in a commercial design firm and soon went into residential design. I have been a designer for 11 years.
Q: What was your first "career" job?
Kate: Working as an interior designer!

Kate: Joanne Thomas and Sarah Susanka
Q: What do you hope to accomplish in 2012?
Kate: I plan to be the best program VP ever for the Columbia River Chapter.
Q: What did you want to be as a kid growing up? Kate: I wanted to be an artist. Q: What would you be doing if you weren't a designer? Kate: I'd be a full-time grandma! Q: What would people be surprised to know about you? Kate: That this March I will be celebrating my 35th wedding anniversary. Q: If you had to give up one favorite food, which would be the most difficult? Kate: Baskin & Robbins Jamocha Almond Fudge ice cream. I've been ordering it longer than I've known my husband. Please be sure introduce yourself to Kate at our chapter meeting this Thursday at Chown Hardware!

Legislative Update Another bill seeking to regulate designers has been filed with the Oregon Senate General Government Consumer & Small Business Protection Committee. Senate Bill 1521 proposes licensing all designers who practice commercial interior design. Although there are single family residential dwelling and retail exemptions, there would be economic and business implications for any members working with clients on offices, condominiums, etc.
Here is the contact information for the members of the committee who will be reviewing this bill: Chip Shields, Chair sen.chipshields@state.or.us Larry George, Vice-Chair sen.larrygeorge@state.or.us Brian Boquist sen.brianboquist@state.or.us
Articles have started making their way in to the media about this bill. Here are two from last week: We will be following this bill closely and will inform you of any town hall meetings, changes to the bill, or movement of the bill through the committee. You can track the bill here. Please contact Dorothy Harter, Chapter VP Government Relations, with any questions or concerns at 503-481-7046. |

Notes From The Board
Robin Fisher, CMKBD, CAPS
I had the honor of representing our chapter at our annual Chapter Representative meeting in Tampa Bay, Florida in January. Our chapter was singled out for our excellence in creating our "Annual Report" in 2011. The report has gained the attention of our national board as a best practice.
Our new local board has been installed and their training is just about complete. I am proud to be working with such a motivated and talented group of professionals. If you are interested in being a part of making change in our association, we would love to have you! Glenda McAdam
I've been busy helping plan our booth at the Home Show on February 22-26 at the Expo Center. We still have volunteer shifts available so be sure to grab a spot before they're filled. If you are interested in serving on the Membership Committee, please contact me. We'd like to welcome a few new members who like to have fun as they work.Kirstin Havnaer, AKBD
VP - Technology & Communications
Well, the Annual Report for 2011 is well underway. I've been busy collecting financial statements, strategic plans, and information from our board members. We're going to be adding some new sections to the report this year around our student chapter, headcounts on how many accredited designers we have within our chapter and a few other interesting factoids. In case you missed our 2010 Annual Report you can take a peek here.Last month we conducted an online member survey which produced lots of great information for our board. We received ideas for programs and events, things we can do to improve our chapter and chapter newsletter, and messages we can forward to our national officers. If you have any ideas or suggestions for our board at any time, please don't hesitate to email or call one of us. We are here to serve you!
Jennifer Crawford, AKBD
Past President
Those of you who not have been to our BUILD Conference at Eagle Crest have a wonderful opportunity to check it out this year on June 21-24. One of the main goals of BUILD is to encourage people from all parts of our industry to network and build working relationships. One of the ways we accomplish that is through what we call our "Common Ground Experience". "Is that a speaker?" you may ask. Not at all. It's much more interactive. The idea is to have an activity that all attendees experience and yet, each person's experience is slightly different. How? Participants are divided into groups to focus on an assigned exercise to create a solution. Last year, each group created a video on a topic chosen by the group members. The imposed parameters of large groups, short time frames, and learning how to post and edit a video encouraged streamlined teamwork and creative solutions. The results were quite amazing. We hope to see you at BUILD 2012 this so you can experience it for yourself.
