Greetings! |
The holiday season is upon us and all of us at Sugar Mill Veterinary Center are busy getting ready, as I'm sure all of you are! Many of you may be traveling home to the states to visit family and friends, and we are here to help you with all of your pet boarding needs. In fact, we've expanded just in time for Thanksgiving, read our news below.
We are so thankful to have a wonderful clientele dedicated to the safety and well-being of their pets. During this busy time of year, don't forget that your pets are often vulnerable to stress, potential danger and over indulgence. Below are some tips to keep your pets safe and to ensure happy holidays for your family.
- Be careful what you share with your pets. Many of the things that make Thanksgiving favorites taste so yummy (spices and essential oils) can cause gastrointestinal and central nervous system issues in pets - particularly cats. Fatty and rich foods can also cause upset stomachs and lead to pancreatitis.
- Pets are also susceptible to Salmonella poisoning. Don't feed your pets undercooked turkey or cake batter with uncooked eggs.
- Toss the bones. Turkey and chicken bones are not something to share with your dogs and cats, as much as they love them. These small bones can splinter when being chewed causing serious problems to the esophagus and intestinal tract.
- Bread dough is a no-no. If you are making homemade bread doughs, resist sharing the raw dough with your pets. The yeast that makes it rise will do the same in their stomach. As it expands, the pet may experience vomiting, severe abdominal pain and bloating, which could become a life-threatening emergency, requiring surgery.
- Share in moderation. It is OK to share a little of your feast with your pets. Offer them small bits of cooked meat and vegetables. Avoid onions, grapes and of course chocolate.
