5 Life Lessons
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

"Monterey Bay Academy has filled a pivotal role in not only my own education, but also in my wife. The legacy of spiritually-based teaching and mentorship, superb musical organizations, and a continued commitment to academic excellence makes MBA truly one of a kind!"
Joe L. Wheeler, Ph.D. Class of 1954
Author, Christmas in My Heart book series
"My conversion to Christ at MBA set my life in a direction that cannot be described in words, because it has been an experience. I could never repay the valuable training and life preparation I received at MBA."
Jose Rojas, Class of 1978
Director, Volunteer Ministries, North American Division of SDA
"I am indebted to the teachers and leaders that I now realize were making great sacrifices to work at MBA. The education, discipline, and life-long friendships from my years at MBA are invaluable assets that will live with me forever."
Scott Nelson, M.D., Class of 1988
Medical Director, CURE International, Haiti and Santo Domingo
"The atmosphere at MBA is very warm and supportive, the teachers are very Christ centered, the school offers many interesting opportunities for a variety of activities, and the campus is an idyllic place to attend school."
Lindsey Henning, Class of 2011
Sonora, CA
"I feel a certain pride toward MBA. I feel it is a school that really develops a child's character. Compared to other schools I have seen, MBA seems so personal and because of the boarding school experience, it is like a family. I feel very attached to MBA and being at MBA makes me feel like part of a kind of special 'club', a club connected with God that has many members that all have that same feeling."
Danica Betts, Class of 2011

It's the New Year and resolutions are coming fast and furious.
I'm going to exercise an hour every day.
I'm going to stop watching television.
This is the year I'm going to... (fill in the blank).
You mean well and you're resolute, but how often do you succeed? How many times have you dropped your resolution halfway through the year or even the middle of January? (I know I have.)
What's the secret to keeping your New Year's resolution? Journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Goodman shares some sage advice:
"We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential."
What are you going to resolve to do this New Year? Are you going to fix flaws or look for potential? I don't know about you, but I've decided to take a page out of Ellen's book and focus on my strengths instead of weaknesses.
Until next time!

MBA News

A generous donor recently gave us a gift enabling us to buy 75 chairs for the cafeteria. We need three times that many, but this is a great start!
Congratulations to Luke Travis, '11, who was named a Commended Scholar by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Campus ministries has begun holding a special mid-week service in Baker Chapel. The service takes place at night and all the students are invited. Afterwords, some stay for a general youth meeting while others join roughly 10 small groups for Bible Study.

Some Inspiration to Start the New Year
|
The earthquake in Haiti in January, 2010 was estimated to have taken 230,000 lives. Christa Brelsford and her brother were Americans teaching English in Haiti
when the earthquake struck.
The building that they were in collapsed and Christa's legs were pinned beneath the rubble. Christa was freed from the rubble by friends, and ultimately evacuated to Miami where she was told that her right leg below the knee would need to be amputated.
 |
Christa Brelsford
|
Happy to be alive, Christa was able to make a full recovery and learn to not only walk but to hike and rock climb using a prosthetic leg. As a show of appreciation to the members of the international and Haitian community, Christa then started her own charitable organization with a commitment to build back the school where she had been working that had been destroyed during the earthquake.
As a result of her hard work and perseverance, the school has already been rebuilt.
If someone can make this type of positive impact in the same year that they lost their leg, what can we accomplish in [2012] if we focus on what we have instead of what we're missing?
