"I feel a certain pride toward MBA. I feel it is a school that really develops a child's character. Compared to other schools I have seen, MBA seems so personal and because of the boarding school experience, it is like a family. I feel very attached to MBA and being at MBA makes me feel like part of a kind of special 'club', a club connected with God that has many members that all have that same feeling."
Danica Betts, Class of 2011

Red Day at MBA - part of National Red-Ribbon Week. |
From the Principal's Desk
|
 | Tim Kubrock, Principal |
Dear MBA Family,
As I was traveling last week, I heard a radio program about texting while driving. The story basically said that many of us are aware of the dangers of distracted driving, but many teens report that their own parents are guilty of texting while driving. Therefore it is hard for teens to take their parents seriously since they don't practice what they preach. It reminds me again of the importance of role modeling and of setting the right example. A favorite poem of mine called "When You Thought I wasn't Looking" describes the importance of our influence (click here to read full poem).

MBA Happenings
|
Thursday, Oct. 27 will be a day to wear red for National red-ribbon week. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. On Friday morning at 9am for assembly, we will have a very special guest, Lynn Wagner. She will share her emotional testimony about the loss of her 2 children to a drunk driver about 10 years ago. In an amazing story of forgiveness, healing and reconciliation, the driver will also be here to share their story (click here to read newspaper article). MBA's varsity flag-football teams will depart at 5 am on Friday morning to Loma Linda for a tournament to end the season. They will return on Sunday evening. MBA's Oceanaires and Westwinds are preparing for their first musical tour of the year to the Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande area on November 4 and 5.

Parent Week-end, Nov. 18-20, Thanksgiving Vacation
|
We hope you can join us for Parent week-end this year. Come experience MBA life and meet the MBA faculty and staff members. Special programs are planned for vespers on Friday night and for Sabbath School and Church. Lunch will be provided on Sabbath at the cafeteria for all parents. I hope you will come meet the staff and students, but please refrain from talking about grades or business on Sabbath :). The Junior Class Talent program will take place on Saturday evening, Nov. 19 in Baker Chapel. Sunday morning is "Take your parent to class" day. You are encouraged to spend the morning visiting your child's classes with him/her. All classes will meet from 7:30am until 12:25pm. Dorm students will receive a sack lunch as Thanksgiving home leave officially begins on Sunday, November 20 at 12:25pm. If you wish to speak with a teacher or staff member over the week-end, please schedule an appointment by email or phone in advance. Thanks for making your travel plans accordingly. It will be very difficult for MBA staff members to help with any Sunday morning transportation. School will resume on Monday, November 28 after the Thanksgiving week holiday.

Policy Corner/Helpful Information
| Each student receives a quarterly citizenship grade on their report card. Students start fresh with an "A" letter grade each quarter. If they receive a conduct report slip, which is a notice of a violation, they will lose a third of a letter grade (A- to B+ to B, etc.). If your son/daughter receives a conduct slip for any reason, a copy will be sent home to the parents. More serious infractions may result in disciplinary suspensions which result in the loss of a full letter grade for each day of suspension. Staff members are also on the lookout to catch students doing something good. In this case, a positive affirmation slip is written and a copy sent home for the parents :).

Lawren Morrison, Asst. Girls' Dean
|
Dean Lawren Morrison arrived at MBA in July and is happy to be serving as our assistant girls' dean this year. She is the 2nd of 6 children, (3 boys and 3 girls) and calls Minnesota home. She graduated from Maplewood Academy in 2002 before attending Union College and Andrews University where she graduated with a degree in Theology. She is currently working on her Masters degree in Education. Dean Lawren's family is important to her and she misses them very much. However, she likes the family feeling here at MBA and loves it when the girls come by her apartment to seek her advice, hang out, or just find something to eat. Dean Lawren enjoys traveling (two of her favorite places were Gaudi Park in Barcelona and Hydra Island in Greece) and driving any motorized vehicles, such as jet skis, boats, snowmobiles, quads-you get the picture :). Dean Lawren hopes to one day serve as a Missionary and also to teach Theology or Religion at the College level. One of her favorite texts, Deuteronomy 6:4-9 is so special to her that she memorized it in Hebrew. We are glad she is at MBA this year!
