Kristian Leukert,
Music Director

Dear music parents,

It has been great to see so many of you out at various concerts.  I know it means a great deal to the kids to see their parents supporting them in their musical efforts.  Thanks to all who have made it to a performance or two.  To those who haven't, it's not too late!  The fine arts weekend (December 10-11) would be the perfect time to catch the students at their best.  I hope to see you all there.

Below are some items of note:

Possible Concert Change

Before this becomes a permanent part of the music schedule, I wanted to give you the chance to object.  Throughout the year, the Choir/Oceanaires have performances at the MBA SDA Church.  Westwinds, however is not scheduled for any of those dates.  I wanted to get Westwinds performing for church, too.  So...I was wondering if any parents or students have a strong objection to turning the Choir/Oceanaire performance on January 22 into a Westwinds performance. Such objections might include a parent who was planning on driving/flying in that weekend to hear their child perform in choir, but will now have no extra reason to visit.  Or perhaps the parent who has planned to take their Westwinds child skiing on that weekend and therefore won't be able to attend.  Please let me know as soon as possible if such a scenario rings true for you.  If I don't hear from any folks in the next week or so, it will become a permanent change to the schedule, i.e. Westwind students will be required to be there.

Thank you for your careful and speedy consideration of this schedule change.

Tour Payment Due

Just a reminder to music tour parents:  Your first payment of $250 (per child) is due by the 19th.  Thank you for paying promptly.  Please note, if you pay through the school website under donations, it is tax deductible. Here is a link.

Passport Information

If most of you are like your children (or me), you have yet to begin the passport process.  Per the information I was able to glean from the Canadian Border Control website, a passport is acceptable, but not necessary.  What is necessary is the following:
  • Proof of citizenship (birth certificate (not photo copy), certificate of citizenship or naturalization) (or permanent resident card if this applies to you)
  • Photo identification (school id can work if that's all you have)
  • Notarized letter of consent.  If there is a joint custody situation, you must submit multiple notarized consent letters (one for each parent/guardian), or else have all parents/guardians with legal custody included on the single consent letter.  Download the letter here or on the sidebar.

A passport will supplant the first two items on the list, but a notarized consent letter is required even with a passport.

Fundraising

Silent Auction
- Jan Shakespeare is eagerly anticipating your items.  She has heard from very few at this point.  Thanksgiving vacation is a great time to get this taken care of.  It would also be a convenient time to bring your items to school.  Students who submit auction items early (by 11/29) will have a special treat headed their way.  Here is the contact form Jan would like you to use:  in hardcopy to print and mail/turn in, or the online version.  This gives us the necessary information to get organized, as well as provide the tax deductible receipts.  Reminder:  70% of the proceeds from your family's donations will go directly to your child's tour fee.  The more items you bring, the more money you can make for tour.  The deadline for donations is December 6.  No items will be accepted after December 6.  Donations need not be at the school at that time.  They just need to be reported to Jan so she can make the necessary arrangements.

See's Candy Chocolate Bars
- Students are out selling (and eating) chocolate like mad.  The candy bars are back and you can certainly take advantage of this, too.  Flavors available:  Milk chocolate, milk chocolate with toffee chips, milk chocolate with almonds, and dark chocolate with almonds.  A box containing 24 chocolate bars costs $20.40.  Recommended sale price is $2.00 per bar.  You do the math.  Some parents want to buy them at the $0.85 per bar (cost) and use them as Christmas gifts, stocking stuffers at work, etc.  That is fine and I will be happy to supply those to your children, but keep in mind that if you only pay back what the cost was on the bars, you child won't make any money on the sale.  That being said, do with them what you will.

See's Candy Winter Fundraiser
- You need to get going on this one if you are wanting to take advantage of it.  Orders will need to come in as soon as Thanksgiving recess is over.  Here is the info previously sent to you:  Winter/Holiday candy and chocolates are available from See's.  I have passed out flyers and order forms to interested students, but
here is a link to the .pdf (just in case it doesn't make it to your fridge on its own).  Make checks out to MBA.  The school will pay one large check for the entire school order on the due date.  All orders (and money) are due on November 29.  This gives you the Thanksgiving recess to sell, sell, sell (or buy, buy, buy).  The order will arrive and be available for pick-up at MBA on December 13.  The music department will be happy to hold on to your order for as long as you need us to, but a timely pick-up is appreciated.

Letters of Solicitation - I have made available to the students letters to send to family and friends soliciting tax deductible donations.  I will even cover the postage.  Just fill out the info and address the provided envelopes, and I will mail them out for you.  Even a small amount of money from a large amount of friends will make a big difference.  Some prefer to not solicit family and friends, and that is fine.  This is merely one of the available options.

I appreciate your time and attention regarding these matters.  May your Thanksgiving experience be filled with the sweetness of Christ's presence.

God bless,
Leukert Signature
