Letter from the Principal

Dear Normandale Parents,

If you thought the end of April zoomed by, hold your hats! It's the merry month of MAY-hem when the pace of life really picks up speed here. There's lots going on and here are a few important updates:

  1. Many thanks to all the wonderful teachers, parents and staff that work tirelessly on so many events and projects that make our school such a special place.
  2. Change is part of what happens when we grow. Last Friday I announced next year's provisional grade placements to the staff. None of the changes were surprises for anyone making a move. I had discussions with teachers and teams in advance. When all placements are finalized, I will publish the staff roster for families.
  3. With many layers of input being taken into consideration, class lists are being developed. All of the Edina elementary school principals will mail out class lists on August 17, 2012.

Each day it is a privilege to be a member of this community. Learning and playing involve a lot of work and yield a lot of joy.

Library Materials Due in the Media Center

 books

This year the Normandale Media Center has checked out over 65,000 library books, magazines and books on CD. It has been a wonderful year of reading and exploring. The last checkout date is May 18th.

All library materials are due on or before May 25th

Please help your child(ren) return their materials no later than May 25th. Your help is very important so that we can get all of our collection back and then repair, order new items and plan for next year. Your children have been learning to be responsible by returning library items-we appreciate their efforts in returning their items on or before their due date.

Thank you for a great year in the Media Center! Keep reading and exploring books and magazines in French and English during the summer!

If you have any questions please contact Tracy Pearson, Media Specialist, (952) 848-4121.

Merci beaucoup

Successful Carnival

You know you hit it out of the park when you hear the excitement and see all the smiles on the kids' faces. Kids were overheard saying things like:

"These were the best games ever!"

"Can I keep playing so I can get more of these prizes?"

"I dunked Brittany and I'm going back when Mme Lukaska gets in the dunk tank."

The PTO would like to extend an extra special thank you to the planning committee for making this year's carnival so incredible! Under Chris Deets' amazing leadership, this year's committee delivered an event that ranks at the top of the charts on the fun-factor! This talented and dedicated team of carnival sub-committee members includes:

Juliette Schneider, Alyssa McLeod, Jill Gorius, Susan Thiede, Amy Vose, Lisa Burnham, Kathy Tran, Pam Rochlin, Rebecca Walton, Janel Dressen, Laurel Fischbach, Rick Hauser, Kate Frederick, Julie Wohlford, Karen King-Meyer, Alex Christianson and Michael Andor.

In Case You Missed It.....

Previously included La Liaison articles are repeated below in case you missed them.

Mile Run for Grades 3-5

For parents interested in cheering on their children or running with them, please join us on the track next week (May 9-11). Please come to your child's PE class during their second day of PE within those days (if they have PE May 9 and May11, you'd come on May 11). Check in at the front office and then join us in the gym for a warmup and stretch beforehand or find us on the track about 5-10 minutes into class. If you're not able to make it, ensure your child gets adequate rest leading up to the mile run and ask how it went later that day.

French Story Time

We are looking forward to a great summer and another series of 'French Story Library 1Time' at the Edina Library. French Story Time is a great opportunity for Normandale children. When you come to French Story Time this summer, your child will have the chance to hear a story read in French by some of their favorite teachers, they can reconnect with friends from school, and become familiar with the French collections at the Edina Library-where new French titles arrive on a weekly basis! And, it is FREE thanks to all the wonderful teachers from our community who volunteer for this fun event.

We divide the children into two groups according to age. One reader for the younger children (kids going into K-3rd grade) and another reader for the older children (kids going into 4th-5th grade).

Dates are as follows: June 18th, June 25th, NO story time on July 2nd, July 9th, July 16th, Library 2July 23rd, July 30th.

Time: 4:00-4:30 Monday afternoons

Place: The Edina Library, 5820 Grandview Sq. Edina, MN 55436 (off of Vernon)
