Edina Intern Experience

All of our students benefit from having French Interns in the classrooms, but it takes a lot of volunteers to make it possible! How can YOU help?
The French Interns play a key role at Normandale Elementary by providing a second French-speaking adult in the classroom. Their presence deepens the immersion experience, increases students' opportunities to hear conversations in the French language, helps teachers provide additional small-group instruction, and provides unique cultural exchange opportunities at school and at home.
You help make it happen! Please sign up now.

Extra, Extra.... Bedroom?

So far we only have homes for 17 French Interns in 2012-13. Help us get that number to 23!
Sign up to Host Here
We can't make offers to Interns until we know we have homes for them! Having 50 host families* signed up by March 1 will enable us to make offers to the BEST Intern candidates before they go somewhere else.
35 Fantastic Host Families (15 to go!)
Host-o-meter
* Wondering why we need 50 host families? 23 for Fall, 23 for Spring, plus 4 Alternates

Summer French Story Time Shadow Needed

The PTO is in search of a volunteer who could serve as a shadow to Ildiko Rieger and help with French Story Time this summer. (You would then lead the effort for Summer 2013 with a shadow behind you). Understanding everyone's busy summer schedule, the Edina librarians prefer to have a leader and a shadow every year for this program.
French Story Time is a great opportunity for Normandale children! It gives the kids a chance to hear a fluent French speaker over the long summer, see some friends from school, and become familiar with the French collections at the Edina Library. Normandale staff and other French speakers volunteer their time to read to the students.
There are 6 sessions offered on Mondays in late June and July from 4:00-4:30 in the Edina Public Library. You do not need to be available for all sessions, but it would be helpful if you can make at least half of them.
Please consider volunteering so we can continue this French enhancing summer program for the years to come.
Please contact Ildiko via email if this sounds like a fit for you.

Garage Sale - Fundraiser for Haiti

Third Grade students are planning and hosting a "Garage Sale - Fundraiser" for their service learning project.
For all students and parents
Wednesday, February 15
During the school day
In the auditorium
Third Grade families are donating gently-used books, toys, and games that will be sold and all proceeds will be used to buy educational supplies for the community of Lougou, Haiti. These supplies and additional proceeds that come from this sale will be given to the organization COFHED which helps this community.

The parents of Cassie Avignon, our science paraprofessional and native Haitian, are cofounders of this organization and live in Lougou. They are working with the native Haitians of this community to provide tools and training for self-sufficiency. We are extremely fortunate to have Cassie among our staff who has shared with our Third Graders her firsthand experience of working and living in Lougou. This service learning project will encompass ALL of our content areas in third grade (French and English Language Arts, Math, Social Science, Art, and Technology). We are excited about this project and we are hoping to develop a long-lasting relationship with this French-speaking community!
If you would like to support this project, please consider allowing your child to purchase these items during the day of our sale OR by coming to purchase any items of interest yourself. All classes at Normandale, just as with the Scholastic Bookfair, will have the opportunity to come to the auditorium during the day to "shop" around. Most items will be priced at $2 or less.

Jump Rope for Heart

Did you know?
- A child's life span is predicted to be less than their parents because of the obesity epidemic
- Studies have shown that increased physical activity is linked to better school performance

Why Jump Rope for Heart?
- It's a fun activity to celebrate fitness and physical education
- Donations collected will help build healthier lives free of heart disease and stroke, #1 and #3 causes of death
- Provides Normandale the opportunity to receive gift certificates to purchase Physical Education equipment
How can you help?
- Grades 3-5 will receive a donation envelope if they are interested in collecting from friends, family and local businesses (As the focus is on Grades 3-5, K-2 will not receive an envelope, but they can pick one up in the lobby).
- Click here to register your child. Email friends and family for
an easy way to collect donations online. - Every child (K-5) has the opportunity to help themselves during PE with Jump Rope for Heart activities February 8-10 (2nd day of PE that week).
- Parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders can volunteer to help out with their child's PE class during Jump Rope for Heart February 8-10 (2nd day of PE that week).
We think this is a valuable cause and community service project and it would not work without your support. If you have questions or would like to volunteer that day, please call or email.

It's So Easy-
Parents as
Sexuality Educators
Why do we have a difficult time
talking with our children about
sexuality? What do our children really
need to know and when do they need to know?
Why is it so important in our culture for parents to be
a sexuality resource for children?
This workshop is for parents of children
ages 5-12 . Join us to consider these
questions, review resources and walk away with pertinent handouts.

Edina PCN Hosts "A Race to Nowhere" Showing

Does your calendar look like a complicated puzzle? Are your children filled to the brim with homework and activities? Do you sometimes wonder whether it's worth it, or even good for them? Are you and your children just stressed out? These are some of the questions posed by the ground-breaking documentary, "A Race to Nowhere". A concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has invaded our schools and our children's lives. This remarkable new film shines a light on the price young people pay for this "race to nowhere".
Edina PCN will host a viewing of the film on Monday, February 27 from 7-9 pm at South View Auditorium.
Click here for more information. Whether you agree or disagree with the film's message, it should raise some interesting questions and provide a great opportunity for discussion in our community. Admission is free.
