Wondering why we need 50 host families? 23 for Fall, 23 for Spring, plus 4 Alternates

Edina Intern Experience

All of our students benefit from having French Interns in the classrooms, but it takes a lot of volunteers to make it possible!  How can YOU help?

The French Interns play a key role at Normandale Elementary by providing a second French-speaking adult in the classroom. Their presence deepens the immersion experience, increases students' opportunities to hear conversations in the French language, helps teachers provide additional small-group instruction, and provides unique cultural exchange opportunities at school and at home.

You help make it happen! Please sign up now.

Garage Sale - Fundraiser for Haiti

Third Grade students are planning and hosting a "Garage Sale - Fundraiser" for their service learning project.

For all students and parents

Wednesday, February 15

During the school day

In the auditorium

Third Grade families are donating gently-used books, toys, and games that will be sold and all proceeds will be used to buy educational supplies for the community of Lougou, Haiti. These supplies and additional proceeds that come from this sale will be given to the organization COFHED which helps this community.

Garage sale

The parents of Cassie Avignon, our science paraprofessional and native Haitian, are cofounders of this organization and live in Lougou. They are working with the native Haitians of this community to provide tools and training for self-sufficiency. We are extremely fortunate to have Cassie among our staff who has shared with our Third Graders her firsthand experience of working and living in Lougou. This service learning project will encompass ALL of our content areas in third grade (French and English Language Arts, Math, Social Science, Art, and Technology). We are excited about this project and we are hoping to develop a long-lasting relationship with this French-speaking community!

If you would like to support this project, please consider allowing your child to purchase these items during the day of our sale OR by coming to purchase any items of interest yourself. All classes at Normandale, just as with the Scholastic Bookfair, will have the opportunity to come to the auditorium during the day to "shop" around. Most items will be priced at $2 or less.

Jump Rope for Heart

Did you know?

  • A child's life span is predicted to be less than their parents because of the obesity epidemic
  • Studies have shown that increased physical activity is linked to better school performance

Why Jump Rope for Heart?

  • It's a fun activity to celebrate fitness and physical education
  • Donations collected will help build healthier lives free of heart disease and stroke, #1 and #3 causes of death
  • Provides Normandale the opportunity to receive gift certificates to purchase Physical Education equipment

How can you help?

  1. Grades 3-5 will receive a donation envelope if they are interested in collecting from friends, family and local businesses (As the focus is on Grades 3-5, K-2 will not receive an envelope, but they can pick one up in the lobby).
  2. Click here to register your child.  Email friends and family for an easy way to collect donations online.
  3. Every child (K-5) has the opportunity to help themselves during PE with Jump Rope for Heart activities February 8-10 (2nd day of PE that week).
  4. Parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders can volunteer to help out with their child's PE class during Jump Rope for Heart February 8-10 (2nd day of PE that week).

We think this is a valuable cause and community service project and it would not work without your support.  If you have questions or would like to volunteer that day, please call or email.

2010-11 President's Challenge Recognition

Presidents Challenge

Normandale is State Champion on fitness test!

A total of 84 students reached the highest level (85th percentile) in ALL 5 President's Challenge test areas. These students demonstrated superior strength, endurance, and flexibility to earn the Presidential level and help propel Normandale to be the top large school (500+ students) in Minnesota. Students who helped our school received a State Champion certificate, Presidential patch, and a State Champion patch. The patches can go on backpacks, shirts, or wherever they'll be visible.

Thank you students for your dedication to fitness!

Beyond ECFE Parent Workshop

It's So Easy-

Parents as

Sexuality Educators

Why do we have a difficult time

talking with our children about

sexuality? What do our children really

need to know and when do they need to know?

Why is it so important in our culture for parents to be

 a sexuality resource for children?

This workshop is for parents of children

ages 5-12 .  Join us to consider these

questions, review resources and walk away with pertinent handouts.

Edina PCN Hosts "A Race to Nowhere" Showing

Does your calendar look like a complicated puzzle?  Are your children filled to the brim with homework and activities?  Do you sometimes wonder whether it's worth it, or even good for them? Are you and your children just stressed out?  These are some of the questions posed by the ground-breaking documentary, "A Race to Nowhere".   A concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has invaded our schools and our children's lives.  This remarkable new film shines a light on the price young people pay for this "race to nowhere".

Edina PCN will host a viewing of the film on Monday, February 27 from 7-9 pm at South View Auditorium.
