Health Office Tips for MEA Break
| |
PREVENT THE SPREAD OF GERMS AND HEAD LICE:
HEALTH OFFICE TIPS FOR MEA BREAK
Close indoor contact with others increases the chance of sharing germs such as the "flu" and head lice. In order to minimize the chance that your child would get the "flu" or head lice, the health office wants to offer a few suggestions.
PREVENT THE SPREAD OF GERMS
- Teach your child to wash hands thoroughly and OFTEN. Always wash before eating food and after using the restroom.
- Teach your child not to share eating utensils, drink containers, OR toothbrushes with others.
- Teach your child to cough and sneeze into the sleeve.
KEEP YOUR CHILD AT HOME WHEN HE OR SHE IS SICK!
PREVENT THE SPREAD OF HEAD LICE
- Teach your child to avoid head to head contact with another child and playing with another child's hair.
- Teach your child to never share hair grooming items, hair accessories, wigs, hats, or sports headgear.
- Check your child's head before and after a sleepover. Have your child bring a pillow from home. Wash all bedding brought home from the sleepover.
- Notify the health office if your child has head lice. This information is important for tracking and management purposes.
- Check your child's head for head lice and nits before returning to school from MEA break.
To learn more about head lice or for additional photos of nits and lice in hair, click here.
If you find head lice, notify the school health office and the parents of your child's friends.
For directions on how to control the spread of lice at home, follow click here.
If you have questions, please feel free to call your school health office.

Edina School Funding - Election Update #1
| |
Your vote for school funding is needed this Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th!
Two revenue referendums for Edina Public School funding are on the ballot:
- A renewal, at essentially the same rate we pay now, of an existing property tax levy that currently provides $3 million per year for the general operation of our schools.
- A renewal, at an increased rate, of an existing property tax levy that is used to fund technology in our schools.
The State funds 70% of our budget; we fund the rest through property taxes. Unfortunately, State funding during the past ten years has not even kept pace with inflation. Our school district has had to reduce its budget by 6% in the last five years through painful cuts to school programming.
***If both of the referendums do not pass, the District will have to cut an additional $4 million from the budget due to the loss of current revenue. This will result in larger class sizes, decreased class offerings, program reductions, and postponement of needed upgrades to technology.
We need you to vote on November 8th. The votes of school parents are essential to passing both of these referendums. This is an off-year election, so lower voter turnout is expected, making each vote more important. If parents don't vote, these referendums will not pass!

Sign Up Now Open for Art Adventure in Grades 3-5!
Art Adventure is a program for students in grades K-5 based on original paintings, sculpture, textiles, and photographs from the collection at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This year's colorful and inspirational collection is called "Let's Celebrate Life," and it includes classic and contemporary works from around the world.
According to MIA, the goal of Art Adventure is to provide an opportunity for elementary students to develop skills in art appreciation through the discussion of individual works of art. Art appreciation means understanding the significance of a work of art and the context in which it was created.
Art Adventure is offered within art class for grades K-2, but students in grades 3-5 need to sign up to participate in the program. The series is offered over the lunch/recess period, and students can bring their lunch to the presentations. The works are presented by trained volunteers (Normandale parents and grandparents), and each presentation includes an art project related to the specific presentation.

Bring in your Box Tops!
| |
Every year, Normandale families raise significant funds by participating in silent fundraisers that benefit the school. Participation is easy and funds are used to purchase needed educational merchandise for our kids and classrooms.
Look for the labels on General Mills products you already buy. Encourage your children to help clip, collect and bring them into their classroom throughout the year. We do the rest. Thank you!!! |

Parenting with Love & Leadership: Equipped, but NOT Entitled
John Rosemond
New Date: Monday, November 14th at 7p.m.
New Location: Colonial Church, Edina
Tickets: $15 in advance, $20 at the door

In today's child-centered culture, are parents equipping children for the real world? Or are good intentions creating entitled kids?
John Rosemond makes the case that today's well-meaning parents do too much for their kids and try too hard to be well-liked. How do we break the cycle of doing for our kids what they need to learn to do for themselves? In a thought-provoking presentation, Rosemond will share his strategies for parenting with the essential ingredients of Love and Leadership in ways that help children grow into responsible, compassionate adults.
John Rosemond is a family psychologist, best-selling author and nationally syndicated parenting columnist in more than 200 newspapers. To learn more and purchase tickets, visit the Edina Parent Communication Network's website.
