Policy for Informational Flyers
Please note that the Edina Public Schools does not send home informational flyers from local community groups or extracurricular activity vendors. Anyone wishing to send flyer may review the No Flyer Zone policy.
District departments and schools do not distribute flyers to students produced by or on behalf of non-school, non-school district organizations. Students at Normandale Elementary will not bring home from school a variety of flyers and informational pamphlets about non-school-site programs and events. Our families may receive information about activities at school, school district programs and events and other school-related news. Edina Schools will assist in posting non-school options on a social networking space linked to our Facebook page. Families interested in the wide variety of options available to them should subscribe (RSS) or check the site for such information. Please be sure that you notify the principal's office if you have no electronic access available to you and wish to know about such opportunities.

2011-2012 Interns | |
Do you know these people?

Now is a great time to get to know the new interns. They are a very important part of the immersion experience and spending time with a native French speaker is a wonderful opportunity for your children. Think about including an intern in your fall activities such as a trip to an apple orchards, walks, sport events... Share our wonderful community with them through bike rides, sightseeing, a trip to the mall, neighborhood events, bowling... Or invite them into your homes for a home-cooked meal, family game night, cookie baking, an all-American bar-be-cue... Plans do not need to be elaborate. They are here to experience all aspects of life in the U.S.
Contact information for the interns can be found on the Intern Website.
One reminder, interns can NOT be used as babysitters or tutors by host families or anyone else. They are here to work in the classroom and outside work is a visa violation.
There is also a list of qualified tutors approved by the district available from Verleen Howell at the district office. Her contact information 952-848-3902 or email.
There will also be enrichment classes again this year at Normandale, more information will be sent out soon, and there is the homework lab available at Valley View for the middle school students.

Thanks to Volunteers | |
Merci, Merci, Merci!
Picture Day ran smoothly due to the great parents that volunteered - Chris Conte, Shannon Sieve, Julie Wellmann and Kris Wetmore. Thank you all for making the kids relaxed and helping them put on their best smiles. Also, to Karen and Brittany for their continued support!
The kids are settled in their classes and have their pencils, scissors, folders and much more in place thanks to the help of the crew that sorted and delivered the school supplies to the classrooms prior to school starting! A huge thanks to the parents and families that helped in making that process run effortlessly - The Sengs, the Pascals, the Bonnevilles, the Vaillancourts, the Linders, and the Chirpich family. Success comes with support!
Thank you!

Innisbrook Fundraiser
By now each student should have received a large envelope with the details, catalogs and an order form for our annual Innisbrook fundraiser. Our goal this year is $20,000 in profit to the PTO to help fund our amazing Interns. The sale deadline is Thursday, October 6.
If you have more than one child at Normandale participating in the sale, you have two options:
- Set up an Innisbrook account for each child and enter the items that child sells. They will earn a prize just for themselves.
- Set up an Innisbrook account for just one child and enter all the items sold by the family on that one profile. The kids can work towards a larger prize that they can share.
And, if you have long-distance friends and family, they can also participate easily. When you create your child's account, Innisbrook can provide you a customized link allowing them to shop on-line, credit the items to your child's prize tracker, and have the order shipped directly to the buyer.
Questions about the sale or how to enter your orders? Contact Innisbrook Customer Service or Susan DeSimone at 952-922-4077.

Social Work News | |
I am excited to begin my fifth year at Normandale. As in the past, I am available to work with students and consult with parents on a wide variety of topics such as social and friendship skills, emotional regulation, impulse control, work habits, and developing responsibility.
I also go into the classrooms and do presentations that will help support the growth and enhancement of the whole child and work to help build the foundation of a positive social climate within the school setting. This year there will be a particular emphasis on both bullying prevention and recognition and celebration of diversity. It is our goal at Normandale to continue to create a place where all students feel welcome and safe, both physically and emotionally. We want each student to feel like he/she is a worthy person who is appreciated for his/her unique talents as a student and as a person. We will encourage students to act respectfully and friendly towards each other and if there are reports that any student is feeling this is not happening; we will take each matter seriously to work towards resolution in a way that feels positive for all involved. It is recommended that parents be familiar with the Edina Handbook of rights and responsibilities, which is found under parent resources on the Edina District Website for guidelines in respect to these topics. I will begin the classroom presentations this week. Please look for any worksheets that your child will be bringing home so that you can have a discussion with him/her that helps to reinforce the idea of acting in an accepting and respectful manner towards others. If you have questions or concerns in regards to these matters, or anything else I welcome calls or visit.
My schedule this year is:
Monday and Wednesday afternoons
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday mornings.
My phone number is 952 848-4108 or you can email me.
I look forward to teaming with teachers and parents to help support our children's development as competent, caring, and responsible persons.
