Greetings!

OK, the holidays are done and gone (and I hope they were really fun for you).  Many of us made resolutions, personal and professional, for 2011.  Resolutions, by another name, are goals.  How do we achieve goals?  Read on...

A heckler?
Bob thinks my last newsletter ignored some things.
My last newsletter was about Create, Promote, Allow.  One of my regular readers, who we'll call Bob, has been heckling me that those three are not the whole story.  He is correct.  So lets call this newsletter CONTROL, INFLUENCE or WORK WITH, part 2 of Create, Promote, Allow.

Create, Promote, Allow talked about how we got here - did we Create it, Promote it or Allow it?  Bob the heckler rises to the occasion to say that there are some things in our current state that are none of the above.  "What about serious illness", he asks?  "What about car accidents?"  "Did we create or promote or allow those?"  Assuming that there was no ill intent in getting sick or wrecked, then, no; thus there are forces at work beyond Create Promote Allow.

I have found that, in addition to Create Promote Allow there are things we can CONTROL, or maybe not outright Control but can INFLUENCE; or, absent the ability to Control OR Influence, then we must WORK WITH - things like serious illness or car accidents.  Bob also points out that his boss is, ummm, er, hmmm, difficult to work for - "did I create, promote or allow him to be difficult?"  (And you gotta imagine here, Bob uses ALL CAPS a lot).

So this brings us to CONTROL INFLUENCE and WORK WITH (Bob - the all caps are for you, and maybe for some occasional emphasis).  It is true, Bob cannot control his boss, or accidents (that's why they're called accidents), or even serious illness.  In some ways, maybe small maybe large,  Bob can INFLUENCE his boss, his driving, his overall health.  Yet, Bob is also correct that sometimes stuff happens, and we just have to WORK WITH it.  Lets take the boss thing first.  Few of us can CONTROL the boss.  OK, fine.  There are times when we can INFLUENCE the boss - understanding the boss's needs for, and delivering - through research and hard work - a polished product, or understand the boss's needs for a certain communication style, or pick the better times of the day for certain kinds of messages, or, or or...  And then there's always the CONTROL possibility to find a new boss, new role, new company.  So, maybe Bob is Allowing his boss to be difficult.

And then the illness/accident thing?  Is our only option WORK WITH?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  We can still CONTROL our outlook, how we speak of it.  ("How you feeling today?"  "Better and better every day.  Small steps, you know..." vs. "I feel like crap!")  We can CONTROL taking our meds or our physical therapy.  We can INFLUENCE the process by having open communication with our doctor, caregiver, spouse.

Lets get back to business.  What are you working on?  What are your goals that you want to make better/faster/more progress on?  What can you CONTROL?  INFLUENCE?  What must you merely WORK WITH?  What are you Allowing  that you could influence or just outright change?

The CONTROL things - what are they?  How will you CONTROL them?  How will you know if you Controlled them well?

The things you cannot Control, but can INFLUENCE - what are they?  How will you INFLUENCE them?  How will you know if you Influenced them well?

Which leaves us with WORK WITH - what are they?  Are you sure you can't have some measure of Control? Influence?  And if it's really only WORK WITH, what options do you have to CONTROL or INFLUENCE even smalls parts of it, even the way you think or speak about it?

Email me or call/txt me 732-535-1768 and lets talk about it.  You do have possibilities, and they are endless!!!  Lets get a few of them defined, chosen and put in action.

And speaking of change...
and at the risk of being redundant and repeating myself

Yeah, yeah, I know, this is a repeat from last month, but it's good stuff, and it bears repeating.

Nothing changes until something changes, and for someTHING to change, usually someONE has to change.
What do you want to change for YOU in the new year?  What and How are YOU willing to change?  Coaching helps you get very clear - laser-focused - on goals, then examine options and possibilities to achieve your goals- the benefits, risks, costs and obstacles, build action steps and then take action and measure results.

Worried about getting started?  I recently read an article about worrying.  An interesting concept came out of it.  Dallas businessman and overall motivational guy Fred Smith asks the question "A year ago, what were you worrying about?"  Most people can't even begin to answer that question - they don't remember!  Why?  Because what they were worrying about never came about.  Fred says "The average worrier is 92% inefficient - only 8% of what we worry about ever comes true."  Charles Spurgeon says it well: "Today's anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, but only empties today of its strength."

What are you worried about today?  With a 92% probability, it won't won't come to pass.  Are those odds good enough for you to quit worrying and take action?

Progress and change are not without cost.  Neither are sitting still and maintaining an unacceptable status quo.  The cost of sitting still is always greater than the cost of making progress.

Is 2011 your year for quantum leap success?  Contact us at Larry Hayes Partners and lets get started.  May 2011 be your best year ever!  We are here to help you make that happen.

Those pesky resolutions
Who started this foolishness, anyway?
Janus
The culprit
Did you make any New Year resolutions this year?

Did you know that the tradition of the New Year's Resolution goes all the way back to 153 BCE? Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. And partially, for that reason, Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year.

And now you know.
