Greetings!
The holidays are upon us and many are wrapping up their business year. If its been a good (or even great) one, there is lots to give thanks for. If its been less than great, there is lots to give thanks for. Warm wishes from us at Larry Hayes Partners for a great Thanksgiving. |
A wedding, a funeral and Thanksgiving
Mixed emotions
| Its been an interesting week.
On Saturday I went to the wedding reception of two friends. It was a great celebration - the food, the friends, the wedding video, (the OSU football game in the background). Even more than that, it was the promise of new and expanded life for the bride and groom. Even before they were married, they had become incredible people - well educated, smart, professionally employed, making good livings, great looking, athletic. And the wedding brought together their two individual potentials to form a third potential - the synergy that is created when two fantastic people marry one another. I am in awe of the promise and the potential that their wedding brings to them, and to those of us who are their friends.
Sunday afternoon was the memorial service for George Haddad, my piano professor from my college years. Prof. Haddad was an incredible teacher, lived well into his 90s and was teaching and playing up until a couple weeks before his passing. I started college in the autumn of 1970, just after the student uprisings the previous spring (remember the whole Kent State thing?). National Guard still had a presence on campus and it was more than a bit scary. Prof. Haddad just had this way about him; sure, he was a consummate professional teacher and performer, and at the same time he somehow understood that we freshmen were entering a very different world than normal freshmen would have. He went out of his way to make us feel welcome and reduce the tension that everyone felt on campus, he invited groups of us to his nearby home to play for each other, served us food, and in good weather, swim in his pool. It was a sad day to learn of his death. Yet, his was a life well-lived. He was an incredible role model for me and my fellow-aspiring concert pianists. Upon my return to Columbus in 2008, many years since college, George and I had coffee a few times, lunch occasionally, and he came to my house for dinner. He was still a charmer, played my piano (Rachmaninoff, I think it was) and regaled us with stories of his university and performance careers. George, thanks for everything, and rest in peace.
So, that brings us to Thanksgiving and mixed emotions. I am thankful for the wedding reception, the happy couple and friends, and all the potential that this marriage brings. With his friends and family I mourn the passing of my beloved teacher, yet am thankful for the opportunity to have had George as a teacher and role model. Life is a lot like that - new things opening up, other things passing away.
What new doors are opening up in your life? Which doors are closing or need to close? As a coach, it is my job to help you look at these opportunities for change and growth. With your eye on the future and your goals, what do you need to start doing or do more of? Stop doing or do less of? What is it time to pause and give thanks for?
I am always interested to hear what you are working on, what changes you are implementing, what new goals you have. Click here to see how our process can help you achieve your goals faster, with less wear and tear.
Happy Thanksgiving. Go Bucks! Beat Michigan!

So many kudos
| Thanks to all of you who contacted me after our inaugural issue in October. It seems that the rabbit story connected well for a lot of folks. I learned a lot about what people are working on, their success stories to celebrate and their obstacles to work around.
And just so you know, I see far fewer rabbits these days. Its only logical - the vegetable garden is now gone, killed by the frost. The bunny food supply (aka my vegetable plants) has been mulched and recycled, returned to the soil to provide nutrients for next summer's garden. And that's a whole other coaching conversation - how what we've learned from the past becomes nutrients for our future. Email me. Lets talk about how to get you there faster.
