Dear Parents,

This is a re-send of my note of a few days ago which had a "broken link" for our sign-ups for our Board's discussion of Tony Wagner's "The Global Achievement Gap." To participate in our "book group" on October 3, click here

If you want to sign up for Monday's Strategic Planning forum at 7:00 at Cano Hall, please click here. (If you've already signed up, that link was working and there's no need to sign up again).

For more details about these two events, see below.  I hope you can participate in one or both of these activities!

Thank you,
Eric Hartwig, Superintendent
Announcement for Parent/Community Forum
Strategic Planning Needs Parent Input!

I along with the Las Lomitas Board of Trustees would like to invite parents and community members to attend a Parent/Community Forum to provide ideas for our new Strategic Plan. The Forum will be Monday, September 26, 2011 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in Cano Hall on the Las Lomitas School campus. The format for the evening will include small group discussions and reporting out on the following topic:

"What are the features of an educational program for the LLESD that will best prepare our students for college and career success in the 21st century?"

The forum will be facilitated by Cathy Townsley and Barbara Young, consultants from Pivot Learning Partners, who the Board hired to lead the Strategic Planning process. Ideas from the parent/community, faculty and student forums scheduled this month will be shared with the Strategic Planning Committee at their next meeting September 29th. At a special January Board meeting, I and  the Strategic Planning Committee will present a draft Strategic Plan for consideration by the The Board of Trustees, which will adopt a new Strategic Plan at its February meeting. You can sign up for the Parent/Community Forum by clicking here

For more information about our Strategic Plan process and activities, click hereMembers of the Strategic Planning Committee, the agendas, meeting notes and timeline are posted on the LLESD website.

I also encourage parents to explore the 21st century section of the LLESD website to learn about the resources available about 21st Century teaching and learning. Please click here for more information about our 21st Century project.

Background: In January 2011 the LLESD Board adopted seven new goals. Two of the goals began the work to design a new Strategic Plan. Specifically these goals state:

21st Century Learning.

Launch and participate in a community-wide process to identify the features of an educational program for the LLESD that will best prepare our students for college and career success in the 21st century.

Strategic Planning

Launch and participate in a district-wide strategic planning process that is inclusive, meets the community needs, and follows a best practices approach.

  • Strategic planning subcommittee to provide leadership

We look forward to seeing you at the Parent/Community Forum on September 26. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me or the two Board Representatives for the Strategic Plan, Ann Jaquith (ajaquith@stanford.edu) or Maria Doktorczyk (DOKMAS@sbcglobal.net).

Have You Read......
The Global Achievement Gap; Why Even Our Best Schools Don't Teach the New Survival Skills Our Children Need -- And What We Can Do About It, by Tony Wagner?

I ask this question, because a lot of people in our district are currently reading this fascinating book that has a lot to say about the issues we are facing in our own district. Our Board of Trustees, members of our Strategic Planning Committee, staff, and parents have found that this book really touches a nerve, and we've using the book to generate ideas for discussion and consideration.

On October 3 our Board is holding a special forum to discuss this book with parents and staff, and we would love you to join us. The forum will be held in Cano Hall on the Las Lomitas School Campus at 7:00 pm. The discussion group will be facilitated, and we hope that the process will generate ideas that will enrich our district's Strategic Planning process.
