UICDS Update Newsletter Masthead
UICDS keeps you better informed so you can make better decisions.  UICDS is information sharing middleware for NIMS incident management that continuously receives and shares standardized data among many agencies during an incident.   Your everyday application gets from UICDS exactly the data you need to use, visualize, process, improve, decide, and then share back through UICDS to keep everyone informed.

Because UICDS is middleware, there is no new user interface to learn, no cost to obtain it, and you retain complete control over your data.  You get notified when an agency has provided new or updated incident data and you share your data with whom you want instantaneously and in the background without any disruption to your operation.

With UICDS you are better informed, your partners are better informed, and together you all make better response decisions.

Learn All About UICDS Interoperability Middleware in Just Two Minutes
Your time is valuable, so here it is in a nutshell.
UICDS is middleware to share information among applications used by all levels of government and critical infrastructure to manageincidents.   UICDS has no end-user interface, so there is no training or new applications to buy.
You should care about UICDS if you manage emergencies or provide technologies to those who manage emergencies.

ESRIUICDS in the Cloud for NLE 11 Parallel Technology Showcase

Learn How to Participate on the Thursday May 12 UICDS Tutorial and Biweekly Call

Nothing short of UICDS in the Cloud will support comprehensive information sharing in a major disaster.  So while the National Level Exercise for 2011 is occuring with thousands of players across the Midwest, UICDS will be conducting a parallel technology showcase using a cloud deployment to show how UICDS can scale to a national event.

The UICDS Technology Showcase will incorporate real
UICDS in the Cloud for NLE 11UICDS Pilots from across the country along with Technology Provider applications to illustrate how information flows through the UICDS peer-to-peer architecture - all the way to the cloud.
Among the capabilities that will be showcased are:

  • Mobile Assessment Application with Image Sharing (IMDSS from ElanTech)
  • Donated Medical Supplies to Identified Clinics Affected by Incidents (SAP and ESRI ArcGIS by Direct Relief International)
  • CAP Message Injects from NLE 11 VNN News (CAP Tool from New Jersey Institute of Technology)
  • CAP Message Injects Converted to Incident Work Products for Sharing (UICDS Tools by the UICDS Team)
  • Hospitals Relevant to Incidents Identified and Shared (ESRI ArcGIS and UICDS Adapter)
  • ETeam Incidents Created and Shared (NC4 and ARDEC using ETeam)
  • External Situational Awareness (ESA) Alerts Injected as CAP Messages (NC4 and ARDEC using ESA)
  • WebEOC Incidents Created and Shared (ESi911 and UICDS Team using WebEOC)
  • Blue Force Tracking (Draknotas using Dragon Force)
  • ALOHA Toxic Air Dispersion Model Shared and Visualized (Environmental Protection Agency's ALOHA model and UICDS Tools ShapeFile Injector)

Learn all about the UICDS in the Cloud for the NLE 11 Parallel Technology Showcase on the biweekly UICDS call this coming Thursday, May 12 at Noon ET.

And, as always, we will have our popular "open mic" session on our Thursday call where you can ask anything about anything. And get answers from the UICDS Team experts.

To join the tutorial and our biweekly "open mic":

ObserverBe an Observer (at Your Own Desk) to the UICDS NLE 11 Technology Demonstration

Two important tools for viewing of map-based data are the ESRI Flex Viewer and Google Earth.  Both have capabilities to customize the visualization tool and to bring in multiple sources of information.

And both will be on display - available to you - as part of the UICDS NLE 11 Technology Demonstration.  All you need to do is request a username and password to get access to these tools to see what is unfolding on UICDS related to NLE 11.  By requesting access you will be able to use either Google Earth and/or the UICDS NLE 11 Flex Viewer to watch what is going on in UICDS during the exercise.  We will be publishing a schedule of special featured technology demonstrations (see previous article) but you can tune in at any time to check out what is happening in NLE 11.

The NLE 11 Flex Viewer is an example of one of the goals of UICDS - to provide example code to Technology Providers to make their development of application adapters as fast and easy as possible.

The ESRI Flex Viewer is an increasingly popular map viewing application.  Like Google Earth, it is a free and downloadable application that allows users to build mapping applications with considerable ease.  Your use of the UICDS NLE 11 Flex Viewer is made possible by UICDS Example Code that is available for download to apply in the Flex Viewer you get from ESRI.  This is one more example of the commitment of the UICDS Team to making adaptation of technologies to UICDS as painless as possible.

But you don't need do do anything other than request a username and password to use either the UICDS NLE 11 Flex Viewer or Google Earth to follow along with the Technology Showcase.  You and your computer are all you will need.

TechProvidersUICDS Technology Providers - Join UICDS in the Cloud for the NLE 11 Technology Showcase - Act Today to Get Started

The opportunity is still open to join this UICDS technology showcase which will run parallel to NLE 11.  Technology Providers know that they can establish sharing agreements for their adapters in minutes, so it is not too late to showcase your technology during NLE 11.  You do not need to be involved in NLE 11 to become part of this UICDS activity.  Contact Jim Morentz, Director of UICDS Outreach, to learn more about participating.

In our biweekly call on Thursday we will describe how UICDS in the Cloud is made  availabile to Technology Providers to particpate in the UICDS technology showcase parallel to NLE 11.

We will be scheduling technology showcase times specifically for Technology Providers to show their UICDS-related accomplishments.  We will be doing a video recording of all the demonstrations which will be available to you for your own marketing purposes as well as composed into a UICDS NLE 11 Technology Showcase video.

So, if you want to show off your application and your UICDS Adapter, join us in the UICDS NLE 11 Technology Showcase.

TechnologyProvidersUse the UICDS Development Kit To Win Contracts that Require UICDS Compliance
Recently, the State of California and the State of West Virginia both issued requests for proposals that called for UICDS compliance as a condition of the contract.  Feeling left behind?

Now there is a guide to what it means to "comply" with UICDS.  Get the new  UICDS Compliance Overview report to see the details.  And you can see and listen to the UICDS Compliance Tutorial about compliance with UICDS v 1.1 on the UICDS Collaboration Portal.

If this is you ... and you don't want to be excluded from future bids ... just answer a few questions to get the UICDS Development Kit and example code to build your UICDS Adapter today.  Get started by clicking here.

UICDS Biweekly

Call ...
Don't forget to join us every other Thursday at noon for the UICDS "Open Mic" call.  Join Technology Providers and End-Users who discuss all the value they get - and sometimes the problems they have - in getting UICDS implemented in an area.  This is the frank, no-holds-barred discussion to help get everyone operating better and at lower cost in time and money than they probably could do alone.  Nobody who participates walks away without a tip, an idea, or a good sense of how to proceed with UICDS information sharing.

Call 1-800-366-7242 code 735108 at noon ET every other Thursday.

Check the UICDS Calendar for the exact date.
