beyond the beach to produce products for use around the world.
Margerum Wine Company
By Stephanie Armstrong
At a young age Doug Margerum became intrigued by wine and food. His family took the family vacation to Europe, and there, Doug found his passion. Doug had come to Santa Barbara to attend UCSB for a degree in Business Economics and stayed because his family lived here. After graduation Doug's family purchased the Wine Cask in 1981, which, at the time, was a wine store and wine and beer making supply store. They then created the Wine Cask restaurant in 1991.
"Through the Wine Cask I had many opportunities to taste test world known wines but I kept coming back to the Santa Barbara county wines," says Doug.
When the opportunity arose for Doug to start a winery, he took it. Margerum Wine Company was established in 2001. Its very beginning the wines were made on the Brander vineyards in a separate, very small air-conditioned room. Doug sold those few hundred cases his first year in comparison to now where the company produces approximately 9,000 cases annually.
"We have one of the best climates to here to make world class wines," says Doug on choosing Santa Barbara for his endeavors. Doug believes "there was a natural flow of growth" for Margerum Wine Company. Initially the wine was sold through the Wine Cask Restaurant. Doug has built many connections and friendships in the wine business and those are his customers today.
At Margerum Wine Company you will find handcrafted artisanal wines. "There is a lot in the bottle for the price."
Doug is a "staunch advocate" for Santa Barbara county wines. The feeling Doug has about the wine culture in the Santa Barbara County is that of camaraderie. "Everyone has each others best interest at hand to help Santa Barbara area grow as a destination for wine."
Doug is the winemaker for Happy Canyon vineyards where they produce 3,000 to 8,000 cases per year of Bordeaux varietals and a partner in Cent'Anni wines where he specializes in Sangiovese
The Margerum Tasting Room is located at 813 Anacapa St. in downtown Santa Barbara. They are open daily from 12pm to 6pm.
