Steve Cushman joins Santa Barbara City College Foundation Board of Directors.

I have been honored to be selected to serve on the City College Foundation Board of Directors for 2012. I look forward to supporting the College, the board and their executive director, and Chamber business leader, Vanessa Patterson. I hope that my experience serving on more than 100 local non-profit boards will be of help to the Foundation in their quest to educate local students.

 Making It in Santa Barbara

Making It In Santa Barbara is a series of short biographies on local businesses in the manufacturing sector.  The goal is  to showcase local  companies

who have moved

beyond the beach to produce products for use around the world.

Progressive Surfboards

Dave Johnson of Progressive Surfboards has been making surfboards for 44 years now and "loves going to work". The first board he ever sold was at the age of 14 in Newport California, which started his love for making surfboards. The choice to move to Santa Barbara came when he was accepted to the University of California Santa Barbara. "My decision of where I was to attend college was based on where the best waves were," says Dave on why UCSB. He built a clientele base while maintaining a B average to keep his insurance costs low.

"It's a tough town to make it in, but I love living here. The quality of life is unbelievable and Santa Barbara has such a beautiful balance between urban and country living."

Dave's business expanded to two factories and had ten employees. In the factories he did everything from design, shaping and glassing. In 1990 Dave downsized for personal reasons and now he works by himself at his location at 286 South Fairview Ave, where he once again does board making from start to finish. His boards are high quality at a reasonable price.

Surfboards apparently are not the only things Dave sells. "I'm a fun merchant, I maximize people's fun." Dave often gets messages from clients who share with him the benefit his boards have brought to their surfing experience. Some have even shared that his boards have "changed their lives." Dave's philosophy is that most times surfers struggle because they are ill equipped and that the board sometimes doesn't suit the surfer. Dave is a sort of matchmaker for surfers and finding the perfect board.

Progressive Surfboards has gotten really busy and Dave is at the point where he is "enjoying life" where he gets to surf more and sell more boards. The great parts of his work is being able to take days off to surf and come back to doing what he loves. Dave's favorite part of his work is "watching guys ripping it on [his] surfboards." He is also the coach of the Dos Pueblos Surf Team.
