The Santa Barbara Region Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is proud to announce the winners of their Annual Business Star Awards. The businesses and individuals are
recognized for their outstanding contributions to the quality of life for Santa Barbara.
Businesswoman of the Year (Betty Hatch Award)
Dr. Lois Jovanovic, CEO & Chief Scientific Officer of Sansum Diabetes Research Institute, Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of Southern California-Keck School of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor of Biomolecular Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering, University of California-Santa Barbara. This award is presented to Dr. Jovanovic for her leadership of the Institute and her dedicated research. She is a role model for the community.
Youth Businesswoman of the Year
Jackie Rotman, Founder, Everybody Dance Now! strives to transform the lives of youth through dance, leadership, and community involvement. EDN! has grown to serve thousands of youth in 10 cities throughout the Country. Jackie and EDN! are honored as role models for all of us.
Innovator of the Year
Francis J. Doyle III, is the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering at UC, Santa Barbara and he is the Associate Director of the Army Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies. He holds the Duncan and Suzanne Mellichamp Chair in Process Control in the Department of Chemical Engineering, as well as appointments in the Electrical Engineering Department, and the Biomolecular Science and Engineering Program.
This award is presented to Dr. Doyle for his contributions to scientific research, his invention of the artificial pancreas system designed to automate insulin delivery and his impact on the world.
Youth Innovator of the Year
Blake Colvin, Founder, Cupcakes for Cancer. Her goal is to donate $100,000 to help people with Cancer before she graduates high school in 2012 and to have at least one Cupcake Angel from each of our 50 states! She is honored for her innovative approach to fundraising.
Community Collaboration of the Year
Kathleen Baushke, Executive Director, Transition House. This award is made to a chamber business making a significant contribution to the quality of life and economic vitality of the Region. Transition House's history of community support continues with over 40 service or faith-based organizations and 1,200 volunteers donating their time and talents each year to help local homeless families.
Youth Collaborator of the Year
Jose Lozano is a senior at San Marcos High School. He has volunteered his time as a fundraiser and speechmaker for Computers for Families, the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the Police Activities League, and the Fund for Santa Barbara.
Businessman of the Year
Mario Borgatello, is the President of MarBorg Industries. MarBorg Industries is a family owned and operated business that has provided exceptional service and customer satisfaction in the greater Santa Barbara area for more than 70 years. Mario is honored for his service to the community and his service to his employees.
Youth Businessman of the Year
Tony Jaconette, San Marcos High School, says working with computers has always been a passion. As a high school student, he has successfully created a computer service company and a computer assembly operation. Tony is a role model for all high school students.
