Help Me Finish the Freeway Widening. Yes, I need your help. On October 12 at 5:30PM at Chase Palm Park (323 East Cabrillo Blvd) SBCAG is hosting a reception for the transportation committee of the state legislature. We are hosting them to make the case that they should allocate $150 million for the completion of the freeway-widening project. That's a lot of money, even for those guys. We need to fill the room to show that the community is behind this project. Please let me know if you can make it (steve@sbchamber.org).

Honor A Local Hero Killed In Afghanistan. Event Big Success
Master Chief Petty Officer Louis J. Langlais, a member of Navy Seal Team 6, was killed in action in Afghanistan on August 6, 2011. Navy Seal Team 6 was the special operations unit that killed Osama bin Laden. MSP Langlais grew up in Santa Barbara and attended Santa Barbara High School. He leaves behind a wife and two young sons.
The Chamber, Navy League, Davies, The Bank of Santa Barbara, Signature Parking, The Blue Agave and the Farmers Market produced an event on October 4 at the Santa Barbara Farmers Market to honor Officer Langlais and collect donations for his wife and two sons. The event was a great success raising more than $20,000.00.
Eloy Ortega and the Bank of Santa Barbara have pledged all proceeds from the October 20 event, The Global Economy Impacts on Regional Business, to the Langlais Foundation. This should be another $4,000.00. Way to go Eloy!

"Making it In Santa Barbara"
Ultimate Bagels
By Stephanie Armstrong
Though new to the Santa Barbara business scene Ultimate Bagels stands out as a local favorite. Located on State Street and Victoria Street, Ultimate Bagels catches the interest of many by offering quality bagels at amazing prices. "For only five dollars everything you eat is made in Santa Barbara."
Alex Weinstein, owner of the Ultimate Bagels, started his company in November 2009 after graduating UCSB with a degree in business and economics. The start of his company came from the idea that Santa Barbara lacked a great bagel shop and with a family history of entrepreneurs Alex took that risk. "Santa Barbara is local, it's small and people like to talk and support each other," says Alex on why he chose to stay in Santa Barbara. "Santa Barbara has a small town feel where people know each other and care about the community."
At Ultimate Bagels you will find an array of options with
names featuring favorite locations from Santa Barbara such as Seven Falls Melt, Stearns Wharf Melt, or State Street Lox. It brings you closer to home with every bite. If none of those options seem to peak your interest your welcome to create a custom bagel made to your standard of perfection. Whether it means extra cream cheese or adding some spice to your day with Jalapeņos, at Ultimate Bagels you really get exactly what you want. You can also enjoy Ultimate Bagels at office meetings and events, as many of their specialties are offered on an affordable catering menu.
Ultimate Bagels is "the definition of local" sourcing all of its produce and ingredients from local businesses such as the Berry Man and the local smokehouse. Alex feels he has reclaimed the "lost art of making things totally local." They not only serve food completely locally sourced but also features local artwork, local bands on First Thursday events, and they donate to several non-profit organizations such as the Unity Shoppe and Casa Esperanza. "I like to lead by example," says Alex. "I came from a family that instilled in me to give back to the community." Alex employs students from the local colleges as well as from some of the high schools. He believes in giving the younger generation the opportunity to grow. Alex finds much promise in the future of Ultimate Bagels. "[There's] still a lot to come. We've changed our menu a bit but it's new and still growing."

October
Visitor Center
News
September was unusually busy with Labor Day, UCSB Move In Weekend, The Avon Breast Cancer Walk, and more conferences compared to September last year. There were so many visitors; it seemed like old times, before the economy went south. There were tons of tour buses lining the Cabrillo Blvd and the Visitor Center was packed. Let's hope this trend continues!
