Summer Jobs for Kids. The Workforce Investment Board is currently in the process of developing and establishing the Summer Youth Work Component 2011. This program will provide a meaningful work experience and mentorship to currently enrolled WIA youth (ages 14-21) through the participating businesses.

We are searching for companies willing to place a youth in their company. In return, the WIB will be responsible for all wages and workers compensation. We anticipate placing approximately 100 youth throughout Santa Barbara County.

The participating business(s) will only be responsible for providing the youth with a meaningful experience, mentoring and the skills for their future success.

The WIB would like to invite businesses within the Santa Barbara Chamber willing to participate in this program. Please contact Steve Cushman (steve@sbchamber.org) if you would like to participate.

Santa Barbara City College. The Chamber has two partnerships with Santa Barbara City College, the STEM2 Micro loan program with the Schoenfeld Center and the "Chance for Change" scholarship program with the Scholarship foundation. We currently have 10 students on scholarship at City College and 2 active micro loans. Each of the programs provides $2,500/year for the awardees.

United Way Campaign. In 2010, Janet Garufis chaired the United Way campaign with Steve Cushman as her sidekick. A fabulous forty group of volunteers joined in as their posse. Time to do it again. Cushman will chair the 2011 campaign. I need the Fantastic Fifty for this year's effort. Want to volunteer? Contact Steve at 965-3023 or steve@sbchamber.org. Just 3 meetings. Great networking opportunities.

SBCC Foundation Campaign. Well, if the United Way campaign doesn't interest you, how about joining the Chamber's team to raise scholarship dollars for Santa Barbara City College. Vanessa Patterson is organizing a 60-day blitzkrieg to raise two million dollars for student scholarships. Why not join Cushman's Corkers team. Great fun, some wine and a chance to meet new business associates. Our part of the deal is only $10,000. Call me.
