Rent a Country for Your Next Vacation

photo: Jim Ferri

Now here's a way to avoid all the hassles of planning for a trip -- rent a country for your next vacation.

It's not as preposterous as it sounds -- you can now rent Liechtenstein for $70,000 a night. This certainly solves numerous planning issues such as where to park the car and go sightseeing.

Take advantage of this offer and you'll also get customized street signs, a symbolic key to the state, a wine tasting at the castle of Prince Hans-Adam II, the head of state, and accommodations for up to 150 guests. The local population of 35,000 gets to stay, which is good since somebody has to look after you and all your guests.

You should know also that the Liechtensteiners will also make a temporary currency for the principality during your stay so you can plant your image right on the face of a 20-pound note, just like all European royalty used to do before the Euro screwed things up.

And although the price tag includes various options like fireworks and horse-drawn carriage rides through the capital, the medieval procession or having your logo created out of candle wax are extra, so don't forget a credit card.

Airline loopholes that work against bumped passengers
Bumping by airlines - especially voluntary bumping as discussed in the previous article  Your Rights If You're Bumped From Your Flight - is a bargaining game.

If you're involuntarily bumped from your flight, sometimes an airline will offer you free tickets and a voucher for future flights in lieu of a check as compensation for denied boarding. You do have the right to refuse the voucher and be given a check as compensation instead.

Of course, if you don't want to take the flight on which they want to rebook you, you can always request an "involuntary refund," get all your money back from your original ticket, and go make your own travel arrangements.

But if you feel your negotiations haven't been productive and your compensation isn't sufficient, don't rush to cash the check.

The art of finding a hotel you'll like

Ever booked yourself a hotel room and then once you checked-in, couldn't wait to check-out? It's happened to me, and I'd guess it's happened to most of us.

With all of the travel sites on the Internet today, this is something that should never happen again.

Although it sounds easy, many people still get those unpleasant surprises. The key is to know where to go on the Internet to get a really good sense of the place before you book it.  (photo: Carl MiKoy)

Spa treatments add to St. Lucia's sensuality

St. Lucia doesn't really need spas -- this Caribbean beauty is sensuous all by itself.

Today St. Lucia's face is her fortune and she sells tropical paradise, rainforest and beaches, blue sky and water, natural mineral hot springs and the world's only drive-through volcano.

These are seductive riches all by themselves, but today's upscale travelers want more says the Miami Herald. They want fine dining, luxury resorts and spa treatments that don't smell like rotten eggs. And St. Lucia wants upscale travelers... (photo: Scott Heath)

Fewer hubs means fewer options for fliers

If you live in a small to mid-size city, you've probably seen your airline choices shrink over the last few years.

According to CNN, airlines have been cutting hubs left and right, and that has had a bigger impact on the smaller cities out there.

Delta's recent decision to slash 25% of its flights in Memphis, Tennessee, means one more hub is on its way out. What does that mean to you?
