Window Covering Safety & Kids
As a professional stager, I'm rarely concerned with only design and form... there are also two other very important aspects to good design, which are function and safety. I wanted to take a moment to share these important tips with you. If you've got young children in your home and you are exploring replacing and/or purchasing window coverings, you will definitely want to take a moment to read this month's newsletter. With young children in the home, cord safety is an important factor when choosing window treatments. Although many of today's window fashions come with built-in cord-safety features that meet the latest safety standards, WCSC recommends the use of cordless products in children's bedrooms and play areas.
If after reading this you find you've got the old-style of cords, below is a diagram which shows how you can retrofit your cords:
Remember to always follow these basic window-cord safety rules as outlined by the Window Covering Safety Council

Install only cordless window coverings in young children's bedrooms and sleeping areas. Replace window blinds, corded shades and draperies manufactured before 2001 with today's safer products.
- Move all cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and window cords, preferably to another wall.
- Keep all window pull cords and inner lift cords out of the reach of children. Make sure that tasseled pull cords are short and continuous-loop cords are permanently anchored to the floor or wall.
- Make sure cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit movement of inner lift cords.
- Lock cords into position whenever horizontal blinds or shades are lowered, including when they come to rest on a windowsill.
