Starting this weekend, the Cody Chamber visitor center will be open seven days a week through the summer! We have been seeing good traffic through our doors and are expecting a busy weekend.

First, the Chamber Board recently named Dick and Marjorie Wilder and Charles and Ursula Kepler Honorary Lifetime Members for their many years of service to the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce and the community. We certainly appreciate their constant dedication and support!

There is still time to purchase Kathy Mattea tickets. We have sold over 600 tickets so far, and are excited to have her performing two shows - 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. - this Saturday (26th). The visitor center will continue to sell tickets during the day Saturday and we will have tickets available for purchase at the door for each show.

Our next C2B (Cody Business Breakfast) will be held next Friday, June 1 from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Peter's Café, 1291 Sheridan Ave. We had a nice turn out at our first C2B held at The Eatery earlier this month. The Cody Business Breakfasts are fun, casual networking events that allow members to get together before the day begins. I hope to see you there.

Many thanks to those who attended the Parks Day luncheon this past Monday. If you did not attend, there are some important dates coming up in regards to the release of the new proposed Yellowstone Winter Use Plan.

On June 22, the Park Service will release the updated plan with preferred alternative, and there will be a meeting in Cody at the Holiday Inn on July 19 where they will take public comments on the plan. The Cody Chamber board and government affairs committee will be following this closely and will stay respectfully engaged in the process in order to comment on behalf of our members.

We do not have full details yet, but Yellowstone Superintendent Dan Wenk explained that alternatives may include closure of the East Gate to motorized traffic in the winter and the discontinuation of avalanche control with the howitzer on Sylvan Pass. If that were to happen, the spring opening of the East Gate could be modified from a "first Friday in May" scheduled opening to one based on conditions. Without avalanche control, the opening date could vary widely. Superintendent Wenk also stated that one alternative would allow for up to five non-commercially guided snowmobiles to enter the East Gate each day during the winter. The Chamber will formalize its position on these issues once we have seen the actual language of the proposals.

Our Member of the 1st quarter was Buffalo Jump Wines. Congratulations to Scott Wagner on the growth of his business and its early success!

Finally, the Chamber Board welcomes two new directors to replace the seats recently vacated by Colleen Hodson and Al McCreery. Thank you to Colleen and Al for their service! Tom Wilder, Eastgate Liquors and Greg Pendley, Cody Trolley Tours are our newest directors. Congratulations and thank you for supporting the Cody Chamber.

Have a great weekend!

Vocal Point ends season with Cody performance

They have percussion without drums. They have a rhythm section without a bass. The only instruments on stage belong to the nine voices of Vocal Point. Hailing from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, Vocal Point gives stunning, high-energy performances that have won them the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) and a faithful following throughout the world. Last fall, the group competed on NBC's The Sing-Off against other a cappella groups and judged by Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles and Shawn Stockman. Although not selected this year, Vocal Point left the program proud of their efforts and with a rise in popularity and support from their ever increasing fans.

On Saturday June 2nd, the Park County Arts Council presents Vocal Point, BYU's nationally renowned nine-man a capella group. Two performances will be held at the Wynona Thompson Auditorium, 1225 10th Street in Cody. The matinee performance begins at 2:30pm and the evening performance at 7:30pm at the Wynona Thompson Auditorium, 1225 10th Street in Cody. Tickets are $15 for Adults and $12 for Senior (65 and up) and Children (12 and younger). Advance on-line tickets are available at www.parkcountyartscouncil.org or at the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce at 836 Sheridan Avenue and the Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce at 111 S. Day Street. Remaining tickets will be available at the door one hour before the performances begin.

Celebrate National Small Business Week!

May 20-26 is National Small Business Week, bringing the opportunity to acknowledge small business owners across America, who currently account for creating two out of every three new jobs and will be the driving force that leads to the economic recovery of the United States.

The entrepreneurial spirit of men and women across America has established approximately 27,500,000 small businesses which represent over 99% of employer firms across the states.

This week also provides me the opportunity to recognize the impact that small business has on our great state. As the backbone of Wyoming's economy, the products and services that our state's small businesses provide as well as the jobs they create are crucial to our residents. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there are over 60,000 small businesses in the state and almost 97% of Wyoming employers are small businesses.

As small businesses drive the economic recovery of the United States, it is critical to ensure that they have the resources they need and are constantly educated on changing rules and regulations. National Small Business Week here on Capitol Hill helps to achieve this goal.  We need small businesses to continue to grow and hire more workers. This week unites owners and employers across America through seminars and forums, all of which are accessible by Internet, to answer questions regarding confusing regulatory language and labor law compliance, among many other concerns. This is a week that focuses solely on small business issues and allows for networking and education. This is an opportunity to meet with other small businesses and learn from their experiences as well as to share your own.

I have cosponsored a bill that recognizes the importance of this week and what it does for small business across the United States. The bill acknowledges the place small business has in sustaining and recovering our economy as well as the need to ensure this kind of ongoing education will continue.

The best way to help our economy is from the ground up, so we should help our small businesses prosper. We have to keep helping small businesses in order to help ourselves. I urge you all, as Chamber and community members, to salute yourselves and your fellow small business owners this week. You are what keep Wyoming communities together and thriving. Thank you for all that you do.

More information regarding National Small Business Week, including the agenda and how to remotely access events, can be found at www.nationalsmallbusinessweek.com.
