Winter Extracurricular Classes

The Winter Extracurricular session begins on Tuesday, Jan. 17th. The brochures have been sent home. The classes that are being offered are as follows:

Monday - Le Petit Piano

Tuesdays - Preschool Yoga & Tumbling Class, Elementary Jazz and Hip Hop Tumbling Class, Chess Class

Wednesday - Soccer/Dodgeball

Thursday - Discovering Science

Friday - Golf/Tennis, Advanced Biology for 4th & 5th graders, and Create & Personalize Your Keepsakes

We invite you to join us at our inaugural joint open house event as we kick off the New Year and launch our 2011 Report Card. This is the first time in Fairmont history that all five campuses will be together in one location, and you won't want to miss it! Preview your child's next grade level while exploring our art and science exhibits and enjoying student performances and informative presentations. Spend time with fellow parents and meet families and teachers from other Fairmont schools.

Bring your children along to play with their school friends--kid's activities will include treasure map crafts and pirate themed face painting at our Summer Programs table, photos with our mascots, and a milk and cookie bar!

Junior High Ski Trip

Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 am at Mountain High Ski Resort for grades 6th-8th. Students can purchase any of the packages available to them. Here is the Permission Slip and Rental Form to fill out. Please sign them both and return to the Activities Director, Mrs. Jonna Powell in room 205. Forms are DUE back by Friday, January 13th. See you on the slopes!

In December 2011, the Edgewood staff had two trainings related to bullying. Jill Thomas, Fairmont Schools Counselor, presented a workshop session on bullying to all Fairmont teachers during our school in-service. In addition, the Edgewood staff attended a workshop on our campus lead by speakers from the Orange County Department of Education. The staff wants to be better informed about bullying and how to help our students have the best experience they can on our campus. We hope to also provide some training for our students and parents in the next few months.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior that is intentional, hurtful, (physical and pyschological), and/or threatening and persistent (repeated). There is an imbalance of strength (power and dominance).

What does Bullying look like?

Physical

Hitting, Slapping

Kicking

Shoving

Taking, stealing

Pinching

Verbal

Name-calling

Insulting remarks, put-downs

Repeated Teasing

Tip for Parents

1. Teach self-control through discipline

2. Communicate a zero tolerance on the mistreatment of others

3. Teach a child to control his or her anger

4. Hold family meetings to teach empathy, sensitivity, and values

5. Discuss bullying scenes you watch on television
