 Debate 2011

Hello Edgewood,

As you may know, the Edgewood debate team competed in the annual Middle School Public Debate Program (MSPDP) National Championship which took place on April 16th at Claremont McKenna College.  Representing the Eagles were 8th graders Nick Flores, Kieran Mital, Alison Ren, Francisco Buitron, Liam Murphy, and 7th grader Amanda Madden.

All teams present had to qualify for this event at the local level.  We are part of the Orange County Debate League, and we were lucky to send two teams.  We are proud of all of the schools in the OCDL (a Fairmont-created debate league):  Anaheim Hills was allowed three teams, while Pegasus (in its first year) was able to send one.

At this event, there were 59 teams (177 students) from all over the country.  Our debaters took on the best of the best and should be very proud of their accomplishments.   Please see the information below for specific awards and a "sunny" photo of the group.

Team Awards:
20th place: Anaheim Hills CTL
17th place: Anaheim Hills KWJ
15th place: Pegasus JFG
11th place: Edgewood MMF: Kieran Mital, Amanda Madden, Nick Flores
8th place: Anaheim Hills BCP

Speaker Awards:
34th place: Francisco Buitron

Our final debate is this Saturday April 30th - the OCDL Championship held at Fairmont Anaheim Hills. We hope to see you all there!

Edgewood Parking Lot Safety Reminders

Parking lot: Parking Lot Cone Safety

1) Parents need to enter the churchparking lot from Vanderlip ONLY. We want to have one way traffic in that parking lot. If parents ask another person (grandparent, friend etc) to pick/drop off their child, they need to inform that person of the procedure.

2) No running in the parking lots.

3) Children need to stay by their parents' side in the parking lot at all times.

4) Parents need to slow down in all the parking lots. Please no speeding.

5) No parking on the red curb.

The Perfect Season

Come, Come, feel the spring breeze!

Spring is here with helpful bees;

The warm rays take away the sadness

And fill you with joy and happiness;

Flowers fill the air with a lively scent

A butterfly proudly sucks the nectar as meant;

Lush green meadows and beautiful skies

With a wonderful and exciting surprise;

Chirping birds sing a melodious song

Spring is now gone, but not for long!

OC Science FairCounty Science Fair

On April 6th 2011, Edgewood's 16 top science fair students headed to the Orange County Fairgrounds to present their projects in the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair (OCSEF).  The OCSEF is an annual event organized to encourage the youth of our county to learn about science and to consider a career in science or engineering.  The competition involves presenting a scientific project completed by the student to a variety of board and special judges who are scientists, engineers, and educators in industry and schools in and around southern California.
Following the judging, students patiently awaited the awards ceremony the following Sunday, April 10th.  The results of this year's competition were another amazing success by Edgewood students!  Of the 16 Edgewood students presenting at the OCSEF, 9 qualified for the California State Science Fair in May.  What follows are the listing of the awards taken by our students at the OCSEF.

Kieran Mital won First Place in the Electricity and Electronics category.  He also won the SPIE the International Society for Optics & Photonics: First Place award.
Amanda Cohn won First Place in the Microbiology and Cell Biology category.  She also won a UCI School of Biological Sciences Award.
Meghana Khurana won First Place in the Product Testing category.
Nicholas Ida won First Place in the Environmental Science / Ecology category.
Alison Ren won Second Place in the Mathematics and Software category.
Christopher Toubia won Second Place in the Fluids/Aerodynamics/Thermodynamics category.  He also won a special U.S. Air Force Award.
Ethan Maahs won Second Place in the Applied Mechanics/Structures & Mechanisms/Manufacturing category.
Lam Nguyen won Second Place in the Electricity and Electronics category.
Parisa Baher won Third Place in the Applied Mechanics/Structures & Mechanisms/Manufacturing.  She also won a special OC Engineering Council Award.
Amanda Madden won Honorable Mention in the Pharmacology category.  She also won a special Office of Naval Research Award.
Francisco Buitron won Honorable Mention in the Environmental Science/Ecology category.  He also won a special National Water Research Institute Award.
Chase Walmsley won Honorable Mention in the Chemistry category.
Jonathan Bailey won Honorable Mention in the Applied Mechanics/Structures & Mechanisms/Manufacturing category.  He also won a special an American Vacuum Society Award, a National Association of Corrosion Engineers: Second Place Award, and a Office of Naval Research Award award.
Komal Patel won Honorable Mention in the Product Testing category.
Joseph Rutten won an Office of Naval Research Award award.

That's four 1st place awards, four 2nd place awards, one 3rd place awards, and five honorable mentions.  This was enough medals to ensure that Edgewood kept the trophy for Most Outstanding Junior High school at the OCSEF.  For the fourth year, that trophy sits proudly in the front office, where it will remain until the next OCSEF competition.  Congratulations Edgewood.

7th & 8th Grade Pentathlon 2011Pentathlon 2011

Tuesday, April 12th, the 7th and  8th grade Pentathlon teams attended the 2011 Pentathlon Awards Ceremony, along with proud coaches, administrators and parents. We had one complete 7th grade team and one 7th and 8th grade team with only one Varsity member (you actually need at least two,) yet we still placed as top Super Quiz teams, 2nd, 3rd and 2nd places respectfully. The full seventh grade team placed 4th in Overall Team in Division One.  All together the students brought home 88 medals, with three 8th graders and three 7th graders winning Overall Individual medals!

Candice Crandell, Preschool TeacherCandice Crandell

My name is Candice Crandell, and I am one of the Preschool teachers here at Edgewood. I earned my Preschool Teaching Certificate, and I am currently working on a degree in Special Education.  I began working with children when I was 15.  My first job outside of babysitting was at a daycare at a public school in Walnut, CA. I worked there until I moved to Tustin. I am happy to say that I have been working at Fairmont Private School for 8yrs. and loving it! I love to draw, paint and read. I absolutely love working with children.  The preschoolers are so loving and fun.  My favorite part about teaching this age is the enthusiasm they have for learning.  I have a feeling of instant gratification when I see the excitement on their faces when they learn something new.   I am not only a Fairmont teacher but a proud Fairmont parent.  I love the way the school works together in the interest of the children.  My son who is now in the 6th grade has been attending Fairmont Private School since preschool.  I always feel supported by the staff.

Monica Martinez, Preschool TeacherMonica Martinez

My name is Monica Martinez, and I have been working at Edgewood since 2002. During my first three years at Edgewood, I was the Preschool Assistant, while I was completing my Bachelor of Science Degree in Child and Adolescent Studies from California State University, Fullerton. In 2005, I was fortunate enough to become teacher of my own classroom and Preschool Summer Camp Director. During the following years, I received my Teacher Credential from the California Commission of Teacher Credentialing and in 2010, I became the Preschool Director and Grade Level Coordinator. I absolutely love working with children on a daily basis and helping them develop confidence and skills to help them become well-rounded individuals. During my off time I enjoy spending time with my family, reading a good book or cooking up a new recipe.
