Your Participation Requested for Fairmont's Annual Parent Survey
Early next week parents of Fairmont P-8th graders will be emailed our annual parent survey. To keep the survey anonymous the link will be emailed to you from Options Marketing Research. The anonymous opinions and thoughts of all Fairmont parents in the survey are critical to our schools and highly valued. Last year we instituted a number of changes due to parent feedback-including this weekly eNewsletter! Please take 8 minutes to let us know what is working for you and what is not. Look for the email from Options Marketing Research by Wednesday.
Thank you!

1st Graders Learn About Tibet
Kalden's mom delighted the first graders with a very exciting presentation on Tibet. We learned about Mt. Everest, traditional dress and foods (Kalden and his mom wore traditional clothes), the Tibetan New Year, Losar, and cultural decorations. We also learned that milk in Tibet comes from a yak!! We ended the presentation with a delicious treat called Khapsey, which we compared to a kind of cookie. Many thanks to the Blair family for their time and for educating us on Tibet!

Student Spotlight
Brandon Donovan , 7th Grader
Fairmont students are usually well rounded, intelligent, and unique and Brandon Donovan is no exception to that rule. Those of us who know Brandon are well aware of his good sense of humor and quick sarcastic wit. We also know he's smart, curious and talkative, always willing to share a story or ask about your day. But what he may not share very often is his talent for singing. Brandon is a typical boy, who has played baseball when he was younger, has taken a few karate lessons over the last few years, and definitely enjoys candy and soda. Brandon is also dedicated to the All American Boys Chorus, a singing group that, as you might expect, is composed of boys from around Southern California. This is Brandon's 6th year singing, a tenure that is one of the longest amongst the current boys in the chorus. He sings second tenor, the highest voice in the boys' choir, although he doesn't know if he will be able to keep that seat for much longer. He loves singing, and is extremely proud of the accomplishments he has been a part of. And the accomplishments are many. Last year alone, Brandon and the choir travelled to Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Canada to sing. Each trip Brandon with the choir lasts about 3 weeks, but to avoid missing too much school, the trips are during the summer or time when he is not in school. This year the choir is planning more trips, including a major US tour. As well as travelling to faraway places, Brandon has met and sung with many other singers, Josh Groban to mention one. The songs Brandon sings with the chorus are not only classical, but vary from pop to Americana, including songs from the Beach Boys. Of course, practices and rehearsals are a requirement so Brandon practices with the chorus at least 6 hours a week, but sometimes as much as 9 hours a week. Practices are held both on weeknights and weekends, so there isn't much time for many other activities in Brandon's life, although he did find time to play soccer for the school last year. If you hear Brandon talk about his experiences, you'll know that he's extremely proud of his singing, school, and his family of course. His mom, cat, and parrot are all supportive of the time and effort Brandon puts into his singing and schoolwork. He says he couldn't do it without them. But they aren't the only ones proud of Brandon, so are we, his school. His teachers and his friends are proud of all of his accomplishments, both academic and vocal. Brandon is a unique and special kid, who fits in perfectly at Fairmont.

Fun Run T-Shirt Design Contest
The annual Edgewood Fun Run fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, May 20th. This year, the Edgewood Campus Parent Association is excited to sponsor a Fun Run T-shirt design contest. Students participating in the contest will have their designs submitted to the Parent Association. Parent Association board members will choose the winning entry which will be printed on ALL the Fun Run t-shirts!
The due date to submit Fun Run T-shirt designs is Thursday, March 31st. Budding artists will create their designs during their Art classes. If you are a junior high student and not enrolled in Art this trimester, see Mrs. DeVane concerning the guidelines for designing a Fun Run T-shirt. Mrs. DeVane will submit all completed designs to the Parent Association before the deadline.
The theme for the design is "Fun Run." If you would like to see your artwork displayed on this year's Fun Run t-shirts, get those artistic juices flowing to create a winning design!

The Golden Ticket
This was the best start to my day.
On Friday, March 4, 2011, Hursh and I shared a wonderful breakfast time together. Hursh's name was drawn from tickets that he was able to put in for a drawing we have each Thursday. Hursh had a LOT of tickets in the container this week. Great behavior, kindness toward others, and respecting himself and others were just a few of the character traits that Hursh showed this week. Thank you Hursh! I love you.

Teacher Feature
Karen Letson-Drake, Study Skills & Athletic Director
My name is Karen Letson-Drake, and I have been working at Edgewood for many, many, many years now. Currently, I am teaching Study Skills to 6th, 7th & 8th graders and Physical Education to 4th-8th graders. I also am the Athletic Director and head Coach of the Girls Volleyball, Basketball and Soccer teams. I attended Oregon State and received my Bachelors of Science in Elementary & Physical Education. I started working at Edgewood in 1981 as an elementary teacher then became a specials teacher and years later began coaching. When I am not at work, I enjoy cooking, spending time with my daughters, and designing bulletin boards. Special memories over the years at Fairmont include coaching and travel week. I wear many hats here at Edgewood and enjoy every minute of it! |
