Fun Run T-Shirt Design ContestFun Run TShirt Contest

The annual Edgewood Fun Run fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, May 20th.  This year, the Edgewood Campus Parent Association is excited to sponsor a Fun Run T-shirt design contest.  Students participating in the contest will have their designs submitted to the Parent Association.  Parent Association board members will choose the winning entry which will be printed on ALL the Fun Run t-shirts!

The due date to submit Fun Run T-shirt designs is Thursday, March 31st.  Budding artists will create their designs during their Art classes. If you are a junior high student and not enrolled in Art this trimester, see Mrs. DeVane concerning the guidelines for designing a Fun Run T-shirt. Mrs. DeVane will submit all completed designs to the Parent Association before the deadline.

The theme for the design is "Fun Run."  If you would like to see your artwork displayed on this year's Fun Run t-shirts, get those artistic juices flowing to create a winning design!

National Spelling Bee

This was the 48th Annual Orange County Scripps National Spelling Bee, Alison Renfinal round. Fifty finalists, from twenty-eight public schools and seven private schools,  competed Saturday, February 26 at the Orange County Department of Education. All the finalists should be commended on their high caliber vocabulary skills. The Orange County Register has been partnered with the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the past nineteen years. The Register sponsors the winner and a family member's trip to Washington D.C. for the National Bee. The National Bee will be held during the week of May 29-June 3, 2011.

Alison Ren, an 8th grade student at Fairmont Private Schools - Edgewood Campus, bravely spelled down 42 of the county's best spellers, making it to the final Top Ten Spellers of Orange County, California. Alison held on for two more rounds, but nerves being on edge and anxiety running high, was felled next round. She received a Plaque and a cash award for her valiant efforts. Fairmont - Mable also had a representative, Michelle Phan, who succumbed in an earlier round. It certainly pays to be a good etymologist!

Kent Powell, PE/Health TeacherKent Powell

My name is Kent Powell, and I am proud to say that I teach Physical Education to every single student here at the Edgewood Campus.  From preschoolers just learning how to skip or jump to 8th graders trying to perfect a "wrist shot" in street hockey and everyone in between, I teach them all.  I also teach Health to the Jr. High boys as well as coach the Jr. High football, basketball, and soccer teams.  This is my sixth year here at Fairmont, and I absolutely love it.  The faculty, staff, and administration here are top notch.  I truly enjoy coming to work every day, and the kids are the reason why.  I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in both History and Political Science from the University of California, San Diego.  After college I went to flight school in Florida where I earned my Private Pilot's license, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot's license, Multi-Engine Rating, and Flight Instructor's Certificate.  I began teaching people to fly fixed wing aircraft shortly after with my goal being to log enough "hours" to fly for a major airline.  While flight instructing I began substitute teaching to earn more money, and this is when my career choices completely changed as I had found what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, work with kids and help shape their lives in a positive way.  I feel that Fairmont is the perfect environment to do this, so I feel very blessed to be a part of the Fairmont family.  Being a faculty member at Fairmont has also allowed me to start my own family, because it was here at Fairmont that I met my wife Jonna.  We were married three years ago, and we have a 21 month old baby boy, Jake, and another child due in September.  When I'm not at Fairmont I am spending time with my wife and son and our black lab Axe, taking walks, having fun, being silly.  I also enjoy playing tennis, going skiing, and hitting the beach.
