Fun Run T-Shirt Design Contest
The annual Edgewood Fun Run fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, May 20th. This year, the Edgewood Campus Parent Association is excited to sponsor a Fun Run T-shirt design contest. Students participating in the contest will have their designs submitted to the Parent Association. Parent Association board members will choose the winning entry which will be printed on ALL the Fun Run t-shirts!
The due date to submit Fun Run T-shirt designs is Thursday, March 31st. Budding artists will create their designs during their Art classes. If you are a junior high student and not enrolled in Art this trimester, see Mrs. DeVane concerning the guidelines for designing a Fun Run T-shirt. Mrs. DeVane will submit all completed designs to the Parent Association before the deadline.
The theme for the design is "Fun Run." If you would like to see your artwork displayed on this year's Fun Run t-shirts, get those artistic juices flowing to create a winning design!

4th Grade to Mission San Juan Capistrano
The fourth grade toured Mission San Juan Capistrano and we learned why it is called the "Jewel" of all the missions. It is called the "Jewel" because it was the very first mission to be built and it is the only mission that still has its original structure. We were met by very enthusiastic docents who showed us all of the major rooms and sites at the mission. Some interesting things we saw were the church, which had walls made of gold imported from Italy, the start of an aqueduct that supplied water to thousands of acres, the barracks where the Spanish soldiers slept, and each student made their own adobe brick. After studying the mission system in California, it was wonderful to be able to visit one that is located to so close to us.

Edgewood Parking Lot Reminders
Parking lot:
1) Parents need to enter the church parking lot from Vanderlip ONLY. We want to have one way traffic in that parking lot. If they ask another person (grandparent, friend etc) to pick/drop off their child, they need to inform that person of the procedure 2) Parents need to slow down in all the parking lots. 3) No parking on the red curb.

A Golden Ticket
A Golden Ticket! That's what the students in Mrs. Kaneski's second
grade class are trying to earn. Students are encouraged to show love, kindness and respect to their classmates and teachers. Each time a student is recognized for showing this type of good character, they write their name on the back of a yellow ticket and drop it in the container. Every Thursday, a ticket is randomly drawn and that student is invited to a special 'date' with Mrs. Kaneski. Students may choose to have breakfast or lunch on Friday- just the 2 of us! My first student was Riley Bovee! Riley and I enjoyed a breakfast together on Friday morning- a memory that will keep me smiling all day! ♥ Thank you Riley ♥

Student Spotlight - Amanda Cohn, 8th Grader

Amanda isn't busy - she's involved! This perpetual member of the Honor Roll, who has spent the last 6 years as a member of the Fairmont Schools family, knows how to make use of her time. In addition to playing volleyball and having major roles in all three Jr. High Drama productions, she counts President of the ASB and co-captain of the National 2nd Place Eagles Cheerleading Squad among her on-campus accomplishments. Outside of school, she has won 1st place awards for her dance teams, studies gymnastics and will soon be presented with the Founders Award for the National Charity League - an honor held for those who volunteer for a minimum of 10 organizations each year. In her "spare time," she likes to hang out with friends and family and to design clothes, which is a passion she hopes to turn into a career in the fashion industry. Make sure to say hello to this very friendly 8th grader the next time she passes by. That is, if you can catch her!

Afterschool Supervision Improvements
Dear Edgewood Parents/Guardians,
A few months ago we asked our teachers to contact you to see how the school year is going. Thank you for the feedback that you gave to the teachers. It has provided us with valuable information that is being used to refine what we do here at the Edgewood campus.
A number of parents mentioned safety during the after-school extended day program as an area of concern. There are a large number of students out on the yard each day between 2:30 and 3:45 p.m. Our staff supervises each area of the yard during this time, but the sheer volume of students makes effective supervision a challenge.
In order to address this situation, we will implement some changes to the after-school program beginning Tuesday, March 1st. We believe that these changes will provide a more positive environment for our students. Our teachers and extended day staff will be involved in putting the new guidelines into action.
We understand that change can sometimes be confusing, and so we will have a "help" table set-up outside of the main office. A staff member will be there to answer your questions and to help you determine where your child may be picked up. Car loading procedures are NOT affected by these changes. The new guidelines apply to the students who are on the yard but will not affect the students who report to car loading immediately after school.
I thank you in advance for your support of the changes and trust that by working together we can make Edgewood an even better place for all children.
Regards,
Doyle Smiens Director of the Edgewood Campus

From Your Admissions Director
It's hard to imagine that this is my eighteenth year at the Edgewood campus. During these many years I have watched your children grow and develop into successful students who make me very proud. Each child is special to us here at the Edgewood campus. With parents on one side and the school on the other, students are guided towards a bright future. Their continuing success is dependent upon a challenging academic environment that is balanced by the attention and care of a dedicated faculty and staff.
Here are some of the student accomplishment highlights:
· Debate team wins First Place Award at MSDPD National Championship in 2010 and top awards consistently in new OC Debate League.
· For 2009-2010, three junior high Academic Pentathlon teams win 135 medals total, including Overall Team and Super Quiz Team awards.
· 67% of students (4-8th) on the most recent Academic Honor Roll.
· Over 5,500 library books read so far this year through the Accelerated Reading program.
· Character building through Community Service and Character Counts programs.
· Yearly participation in Lee National Denim Day for Breast Cancer Research ($1500 raised in 2011) and in CHOC Toy Drive (22 boxes of toys collected).
· Active Student government (ASB), with officers attending Leadership Conference, managing the school's recycling program and Student Store.
· For 2009-2010, almost 200 pieces of art displayed in six art contests, with 53 placement winners and five grand prize winners.
· Instrumental music provided for all fifth and sixth graders. · Musical productions performed annually by each junior high grade level (6-8).
· Most outstanding junior high school in Orange County Science and Engineering Fair for the past three years.
· First Place for Cheer Squad at UCA Southern CA Regional Competition, second place at State Championship, and qualifying for the UCA Nationals.
· Tri-Way League sports participation: Boys football, basketball and soccer; Girls volleyball, basketball, and soccer.
The re-enrollment season has begun, and you should have received your re-enrollment pack by now. Every Edgewood student who re-enrolls for the 2011-2012 school year will receive the 2011/2012 Coupon Book which includes two Free-Dress Passes, two Homework Passes, one Free Lunch, and more. In addition, your student's name will be entered into a raffle for you to win a premium parking space for one month during the 2011/2012 school year. The winners of the monthly parking space raffle will be announced at 7:00 p.m. at Edgewood's upcoming Open House. As a current family, we encourage you to take advantage of our priority registration period. Much of our planning for the upcoming school year takes place in the spring. Timely re-enrollment allows us the opportunity to plan and facilitate the best educational experience possible for our students. As you know, space is limited in several grade levels. Returning your re-enrollment contract by the deadline of Friday, February 25, will secure your child's place for next year. If you have a family that you would like us to consider for enrollment, please stop by the admissions office for a new student packet. First acceptances for 2011/2012 applicants will be mailed to students on our wait list during the first week of March. We understand that you have many options when choosing a school, and we thank you for your continued trust in allowing us to educate your child. Teacher Feature
Jenny Howe, Fourth Grade Teacher
My name is Mrs. Jenny Howe, and I teach 4th grade at the Edgewood campus. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Concordia University '00, my Teaching Certification- CA Clear Credential from Concordia University '01, a TEFL Certificate '03 (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University '09. I taught 4th and 6th grades at Canyon View Elementary School from 2001-2003, taught English as a Foreign Language to adults in Prague, Czech Republic, from 2004-2005, and have been teaching at Fairmont since 2005. I enjoy cooking for my husband and taking cooking classes. I love watching sports especially college football and the Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments, traveling and learning about different cultures, reading a good novel, and am active in my church, Mariners.
At Fairmont, I enjoy building relationships with my students and their parents. I like to take an interest in my students' lives and feel connected to them. That way, we build a bond of trust, which makes them work hard as students and as a result, they far exceed expectations that have been set. This pleases everyone involved! I also enjoy being a member of an intimate community at Fairmont. Because our campus is small, I recognize faces of students and family members that I have not had as my own students and they know me also. My husband and I are expecting our first child, a daughter, at the end of May.
