Mr. Bones Speaks to Kinder and First Grade

1st grade with Mr. Bones

Mrs.  Bledsoe and Dr.  Aminian, who work at CHOC hospital, gave a splendid presentation to the kindergarten and first grade classes about  Childhood Safety.  The students were given safety rules for when they ride a scooter, go on the monkey bars, and jump on a trampoline, to name a few.  The students were shown what bones are most often broken on a skeletal model (many named him Mr. Bones) and ways to prevent these injuries.  Thank you Mrs. Bledsoe and Dr. Aminian for your time and efforts to speak to our young ones!

Operation Science in 5th Grade
 Operation Science 1

To enhance the fifth grade's study of the human body, Dr. Elise Luna (a.k.a. Xochitl's mom) generously visited Mrs. White's class and allowed the students to experience what it is like to be a doctor.   Dr. Luna is an ob/gyn who trains other doctors to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.
"Dr. Luna was funny and interesting and she Operation Science 2answered all of our questions," gushed Alyssa Choi. After an introduction, the students suited up and took turns training to do laparoscopic surgery.
According to Alex Jemal, "It was so cool! It was just like playing video games." Thanks to this incredible experience, many of the students are now considering a career in medicine.

Student Spotlight - Melina Nguyen, 4th Grader

Melina NguyenIf Melina Nguyen isn't playing the piano, mastering her math facts, or at religion class, you can be sure to find her in the pool swimming the breast stroke. Melina, a Fairmont student in Mrs. Howe's fourth grade class, is a vital member of the swim club, the Gators, in Laguna Niguel. Melina swims with great tenacity as she practices 4 days a week and has meets on Saturdays and Sundays year round. She wins ribbons swimming every stroke, and her bedroom shelves are full of trophies. This 4th grade fish is as determined in the pool as she is in the classroom, where she is an excellent student. Way to go, Melina! We're proud of you!

Teacher Feature

Mark Hobbs, Science TeacherMark Hobbs

My name is Mark C Hobbs, and I am the Junior High Science Teacher here at Edgewood.  I am also one of the Pentathlon Coaches and the Science Fair Coordinator.  I started teaching at Fairmont in 2001, and before that, I taught Biology and Life Science at California High School in Whittier for one year.

I was born in England and came to California in 1979.  I attended public school, graduating from Pacifica High School in 1987.  I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Biology from UCLA in 1991 and my Preliminary Teaching Credential from Cal State Long Beach in 2000.  After graduation at UCLA, I had the privilege to work for the West Los Angeles Veteran's Administration Medical Center in LA for over 8 years, where I was in charge of the Specimen Acquisition Training program, training laboratory technicians to work throughout the medical center.

In addition to spending my days at Fairmont, I am currently the webmaster and Board Member for the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair.  I enjoy reading and spending time with my family.  I am married with 3 children, an 18 year old graduate of Fairmont Preparatory now attending John Cabot University in Rome, a Fairmont HS freshman, and a 3 year old preschooler at Fairmont Citron.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my last 10 years at Edgewood.  I think it's wonderful to work with such talented children, who not only have the capacity to master scientific thinking, but also the drive to put it to use.  To do this amongst a group of caring and friendly teachers, administrators, and staff, is fantastic!
