JK to Centennial Farms

Centennial FarmsOn Tuesday, December 7th, the two Jr. Kindergarten classes went on an adventure to Centennial Farms in Costa Mesa.  Upon arrival at the farm our groups met our farmer tour guides.  For many of our students who live in urban areas, seeing live animals and vegetables was a huge adventure.  We watched two cows being milked; the students were mesmerized seeing the white milk enter the milking machine.  We learned about many plants that grow on the farms that we eat: celery, carrots, lettuce.  We saw sugar cane plants and oats growing, but the students didn't believe that either green plant had anything to do with their breakfasts.

After petting pigs, sheep, and goats we all planted a couple of radish seeds.  The highlight of the trip was that after learning about the life cycle of chickens, each student had the opportunity to hold a baby chick.  We learned how to put our thumb gently on the chick's back so it did not wiggle away.  How fun!  After eating our lunches in a beautiful, sunny picnic area, we loaded back onto the bus for home.  What a great day!  Centennial Farms is open to the public.  Check out their open times on-line and take your whole family on a fun adventure.

4th Grade Student Spotlight
 Megan Trivedi
Megan Trivedi
Some people stroll through life, while others push themselves toward success.  Megan Trivedi, a 4th grader in Miss del Carmen's class, pushes herself to work hard at her new favorite sport, track.  Megan has been with the running club, The Equalizers, since August 2010.  Since then she has grown to become a well-rounded and successful student athlete.  Megan meets at Citrus Grove Park in Irvine four times a week to train with her coaches and other runners ranging from 6-15 years of age.  Megan is able to run an average of five miles each practice!  She says her favorite part of running is that she pushes herself every day, and that every day she goes a little faster.  Her longest run was 8 miles straight without stopping!

Since beginning in August, Megan has already competed in five different competitions.  Her favorite one was when she received third place at the Junior Olympics Regional Competition and won her first medal.  On Saturday, December 10th, she will travel to Alabama to compete in the National Junior Olympics!  Megan says running helps her feel healthy and proud.  Her goal is to run even longer and faster without stopping.  Megan is a great example of how hard work and perseverance pay off!  Her parents, teachers, and friends are very proud of her and wish her luck at nationals!

Talon's Book ReviewNoah and the Bunnies

Noah and the Bunnies

This is a heart-warming story of Noah, a Rock Dove. Noah was a racing pigeon who flew at speeds up to fifty miles per hour. Noah was seriously injured and had to undergo the amputation of one leg just to save his life. Later, while he was recovering in the home of Georgeanne Lenham, a Wildlife Rehabilitator, it was also discovered that poor Noah also had a small silver BB located near the base of his brain and spine. Who could do such a thing? Because of the location of the BB, it would have to stay there the rest of Noah's life, and he would never race again.  Noah seemed so sad, and although he learned to get around with only one leg, he never seemed happy. Since Georgeanne is trained to care for most of the wildlife around her Texas home, she gladly accepted five baby bunnies from a tearful little girl who found them severely injured in her yard. Though she tried and tried to save them all, one of the bunnies died. The remaining bunnies are placed in a box near Noah 's open cage. Each night, Noah hops out of his cage and sleeps as near to the bunnies as he can get. One morning as Georgeanne is checking the bunnies, she notices that one of them is missing! Cautiously, she lifts Noah to place him back inside his home, and there, nestled under Noah's protective wing is the bunny- ♥

Noah lovingly nurses these bunnies back to health and continues to do so for many more animals that come to be rescued.
