Edgewood 2-0 After Beating Anaheim Hills & Mable

JH BB vs. A. Hills
The Fairmont Edgewood Junior High boys basketball team had its season opener Tuesday at home against rival Anaheim Hills.  The game was close for most of the first half with the lead being exchanged several times.  Midway into the third quarter Edgewood began to pull away closing the quarter with a seven point lead.   Anaheim Hills tried to rally in the fourth quarter with full court pressure and hard fouls but ultimately had little success.   Edgewood's ball handling under pressure and good free throw shooting kept the game in their control, eventually winning 38-28.  Edgewood then traveled to the Fairmont Mable Campus on Thursday to play the Panthers.  The game was similar as it was close most of the way in the first half before wearing the Panthers down in the second.  The final score was 36-25 putting Edgewood into first place in the Tri-Way League at 2-0.  When asked about this year's team Coach Powell said, "These boys have heart and they play as a team. If they continue to play this way it's going to be a fun season."  Edgewood's next home game is against Heritage Christian Tuesday, December 14th.  For a schedule of all the games, game times, away game addresses, game results, league standings, cancellations, make-up games, as well as other information to do with the boys Jr. High Athletics' programs, go to Coach Powell's blackboard page.

4th Graders Share Their Culture

4th Grade Namaste

Namaste!  The 4th graders in Miss del Carmen's class were able to learn more about Indian culture with a presentation about Dilwali and the Muslim holiday, Eid.  Thank you to Mrs. Cavale and Mrs. Talwar for preparing a beautiful PowerPoint presentation about the Diwali festival.  They brought food and sweets to share with the class and a traditional sari for Miss del Carmen to try on!  Mrs. Biviji and Mrs. Khan brought delicious food to eat and created a fun Jeopardy game about Eid.  The students enjoyed learning about these Indian traditions, and they also had fun trying new foods! We are always excited to learn about our diverse student population at Edgewood!
1st Grade Students' Spotlight
 1st Grade Student Spotlight
First graders Kyra, Ankhita and Alyssa have been learning Indian dance for three years.  They have been learning Bollywood dance and are now beginning to learn styles which have some more classical Indian influence. Their dance school is known as NDM and is one the largest of its kind in the USA, led by its founder Mr. Nakul Dev Mahajan. Mr. Mahajan is world famous and has choreographed award winning dance sequences on such popular shows as "So You Think You Can Dance". They are in the youngest troupe at NDM, winning hearts with their eight stage performances in this short time, not including some extremely highly appreciated recitals at senior communities in Anaheim Hills and Yorba Linda. They have started at just the right age. Many highly successful amateur and professional dancers have graduated in recent years from NDM having trained from an early age with Mr. Mahajan.

When I asked the girls what their favorite part of dancing is, I was told "definitely the competitions."  I thought it would have been dressing up in costumes, however, they all disagreed with me because "the costumes are always too itchy."  Keep up the good work, girls!

1st Grade Eid Celebration1st Grade Eid Celebration

A huge thank you to the Ansari Family and Mrs. Chillar for a remarkable Eid celebration for both first grade classes!  The students and teachers were able to learn about this beautiful Indian tradition while sampling traditional Indian foods and getting toys and bangle bracelets.  Henna tattoos were offered for all the students and teachers.  These tattoos were beautifully applied by Henna artists and left on our hands for  enjoyment throughout the weekend.  The students and teachers both appreciated the time and effort from these families for adding to our cultural awareness this season!

Denise MillerI was born 31 years ago in Portland, Oregon. My parents live in a suburb called Tigard, and I made that my home for 18 years. When I was three years old, my parents "blessed" me with a younger brother, Dale. As I grew up, I was involved in many different clubs and organizations, including soccer, basketball, Girl Scouts, and band. Not only was I a part of our high school marching band, but for three summers in high school I was part of a band from the Northwest called Northern Lights. I've visited most states in the country as a result and participated in the Portland Rose Parade, Starlight Parade, Junior Rose Parade, and Disney Magic Music Days at Disneyland. Upon graduation from Tigard High School, I attended the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!) and graduated in 2003 with a Bachelors of English. While I was at UO, I was part of the Oregon Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band. Being part of that organization allowed me to participate in many activities, including the Holiday Bowl and Parade, Fiesta Bowl and Parade, the Sun Bowl, and the Seattle Bowl. After graduation, I enrolled in Pacific University's Masters in Teaching program, graduating in December 2004 and spent the next six months in on-the-job training as a substitute teacher in Eugene and Springfield.

The summer of 2005 I relocated to California where my brother was living. My first job here was in Riverside County at a school called Harvest Valley Elementary. I taught junior high English and computers there. In 2006, I began here at Fairmont teaching computers K-8. In 2007, I added junior high English to my responsibilities. I have just started my 5th year at the Edgewood Campus, and I have loved every year thus far.
On weekends and holidays you will find me watching college football and basketball games, visiting Disneyland with friends and family, and watching movies. I enjoy reading and watching most genres, but science fiction is my favorite. I still visit my family in Oregon and Washington once or twice a year, but I also love to travel around the West as well. My most recent vacation was to Vancouver, British Columbia to see the sights and visit friends. My next goal is to travel to either Florida or Hawaii, but that has to be after my brother's wedding next summer.
