Student Spotlight
Riley Bovee - 2nd Grader
Riley started gymnastics at 3 years old at the Costa Mesa Community Rec Center doing only an hour a week on Saturday's. It proved fit for her as she displayed amazing poise and confidence. By 4 & 5 years old, she was doing 3-4 classes a week for an hour each. By 6 yrs old, Riley was recommended to attend an actual gymnastics academy. Riley started going to GymMax gymnastics right down the street in Costa Mesa. By 7 yrs old, she had to earn her way to be able to work out with the "Team" gymnast. Just last weekend, Riley had her first taste of competitive gymnastics when her gym put on a "Halloween Friendship Challenge Meet." It was for the girls who had never competed before. Her team who she'd been working out with got a trophy and medals. Riley's coaches stated, "This is only the beginning for Riley as she proved to stand strong under the pressure of performing in front of a large crowd. She really performed strong on each event, we were all very impressed with Riley." The 4 events she trains for are the High Beam, Uneven Bars, Floor, and Vault. Riley trains from 13 to 15 hours a week. By January 2011, Riley's national coaches want her to train level 5 to compete at National and State championship meets in the Fall of 2011. |

Service Project - 5th Grade
The fifth graders are collecting leftover Halloween candy to donate to our troops. Fifth grader, Bridget Foley, who is coordinating the project explained, "We thought this would be a good project, because it is something that we can do on our own. It makes you feel good to sacrifice for the troops who give so much for our country."
The students have been making signs to promote the project, and they have decorated bags and boxes so other classes have a place to donate their candy if they would like to contribute. We have already collected two big bags so far, and we hope to collect ten big bags before next Friday. This year, we are really committed to service-based learning, and with all of the wonderful ideas our students are generating, we know we can really make a difference!

Student Spotlight
Liam Cousins - 2nd Grader Liam started swimming lessons when he was 9 months old. When he was 3, he moved from England to the US and started swimming at Anaheim Hills Aqua Duks. When he was 4, he joined their swim team. For the last 18 months Liam has been swimming at Waterworks Aquatics and practices at least 3 times a week for 40 minutes a session.
Liam participates in the Waterworks swim meets. For every race he swims, he receives a ribbon and also gets ribbons for being placed in the race for time improvement.
At the swim meets, Liam will do at least 6 races and does all 4 strokes (back 25 yrds, butterfly 25yrds, breast 25 & 50 yrds, and free style 25 & 50yards ). Liam's strongest stroke is breast. He is working hard on improving his lap times. Last Saturday he got a trophy for getting 75 ribbons that has taken him a year to achieve. The next trophy he can get is for 125 ribbons (a lot of swimming).

Teacher Feature
Kari White, Fifth Grade Teacher
Kari White is a fifth grade teacher, who joined the Edgewood team four years ago, teaching elementary science lab, various junior high math classes, and seventh grade life science. Mrs. White taught a variety of subjects, from P.E. to English and sixth grade gifted students in public schools before finding a home at Edgewood, where she feels fortunate to be in a job surrounded by curious students and supportive parents. "Teaching has always been my dream," she said, "and nothing makes me happier than seeing students excited about learning." Mrs. White has always loved learning. She started in high school, volunteering as an aid in an elementary school. Although she wasn't sure if she wanted to be a teacher, scientist, author, or Nancy Drew, she continued to study in college, earning degrees in English, Liberal Studies, and Science. She also earned a multiple subject credential, a single subject credential to teach English, special certification to teach gifted students, and she is currently enrolled (though taking a break this semester) in a joint masters and administrative credential program. She continues to write for fun and also writes test questions for the CTP4 tests. Whenever she has time, she helps her husband, who is a science consultant, with their business. One of her favorite activities was running a digital academy with her husband to teach inner city students how to film and edit video. She enjoys travelling with her husband and daughter and volunteering with the forest service. Right now, she is busy collaborating with her seven siblings to plan her parents' fiftieth wedding anniversary. |
