Hire Vets First The Veterans Stand Down here in Gainesville was modeled after the idea of a Stand Down in the Vietnam War.  When the troops have been out for a long period of time and need supplies, they are called in for a Stand Down to replenish them before they go back out.  The idea is to give homeless veterans a hand up, not a hand out.

Service providers offered all different social services including:
State Issued ID Cards - 28 IDs were issued at $25 each paid for out of the grant for the Stand Down
Housing Opportunities
Cash Assistance Program
Choices Medical Insurance
Social Security Office
Employment Services
Health Screenings
Dental Screenings and Care
Hair Cuts

Veterans Affairs were on site as well offering their vocational rehabilitation services, mental health services, and substance abuse services.

Veterans were given a back pack with a sleeping bag, clothing, a canteen, and boots, as well as a food bag.

Volunteers included Work Study Students and FloridaWorks employees as well as others from the community.

Rolling Thunder Vietnam Veteran Motor Cycle group provided and made lunch for everyone on Friday of the event, as they have done in years past.

A special thank you to all of those involved who helped make this event the success that it was!  Thank you to the Alachua YouthBuild students for cleaning the building prior to the event!

Please contact Jim Mash at FloridaWorks with any further questions or if you would like to participate next year.
