Everything I Need to Know I Learned from USY

By Rabbi Charles Savenor,

International USY President 1987

In honor of USY's 60th, I offer this tribute to USY and the impact it has had on my life. Based on the words of Robert Fuhlgum, it's called "Everything I Need to Know I Learned from USY".

All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned from USY. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate or rabbinical school mountain, but there at weekend conventions and in Israel with friends, youth leaders and mentors...[read more]

Update on Ilan Grapel

A Message from Hollis Hills Jewish Center

We continue to pray for the safe and speedy release of Ilan Grapel, son of our members Irene & Dr. Daniel Grapel. Ilan has been unjustly imprisoned in Egypt as a "spy". Representatives of the American government are working at the highest levels to secure Ilan's release.

Please contact  Senator Charles Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and ask them to help Ilan achieve freedom.

Social media is also an influential tool. If you are a Facebook user please go to Free Ilan Grapel and "Like" it.

We will include a special prayer for Ilan's release during Shabbat morning services. May God protect Ilan Chaim ben Chaya v'Daniel.

This Shabbat, June 25, 2011, marks the 5th anniversary of Gilad Shalit's kidnapping.  Please remember Gilad ben Aviva in your prayers.  You might suggest that your synagogue place an empty chair on the bimah with a sign with his name and photo on it. [read more and view the prayer

A "Goodie Bag" for My Board

By Dr. Nancy Kaplan, President, Temple Beth El of Bellmore

So last night I presided over my last Board meeting. I was given a beautiful framed piece of art with "The Woman of Valor" as the centerpiece.

I also decided to follow the "goodie bag" model - the Dollar Store was great! for almost all of it - and presented one to each of the Board members (22) plus a special one to my EVP, who becomes the President on July 1st.  I enclosed a thank you note in each one, along with the following list - note: they ate the candy and played with the stress balls throughout the meeting!
