METNY "News You Can Use"

Dear METNY Leadership and Readers of "News You Can Use,"

In its first 18 months, "News You Can Use", METNY's weekly eNewsletter, has enhanced how we communicate with our affiliated kehillot (congregations).

Our METNY staff works hard to produce a weekly eNewsletter. This initiative has afforded us with the opportunity to be in regular contact with you and our kehillot.

"I think this is a great innovation. Yasher Koach."

- Rabbi Mark Greenspan, Oceanside Jewish Center

Using several measures, this innovation has been a success.

1) Data -  Our "open rate" is over 30%, as compared to the industry standard of 23%. In our recent survey over 80% of our respondents reported that they are most satisfied with the content and pictures they find each week in "News". The section below contains additional data.

2) Community - "News" has helped to create a sense of community in our area.

"The METNY newsletters and updates are my prime local source for immediate information (news, grants info, resources available) for educators and for the community; I am most grateful for this. You are filling a void here that has existed for a while."

- Sherry Gutes, Principal, South Huntington Jewish Center

"News" enables us to share program offerings, highlight successes in our congregations, rally around common values and celebrate individuals who are making a difference. METNY includes over 100 synagogues and 27,000 households, and we aspire to reach as many stakeholders as possible.

3)  "Buzz" - We are aware of the positive inroads that "News" has made because of what you and others are saying about it to us and online:

"I have begun to rely on this eletter as a go-to source for events in our region."

- Sharon Waxenbaum, Bulletin Editor, North Shore Jewish Center

"The newsletter is informative and helps me feel connected!"

- Sharon Reichman, METNY USY Parent

While we appreciate the success of "News" in its current form, we are aware that there is always room for improvement. As such, we've put together a report below which outlines the results of the recent survey, as well as our next steps.

We are grateful to the 175 people who responded to the survey, as well as to the members of the METNY District Council, for their valuable input.

B'Shalom,

Rabbi Charles Savenor

METNY District Director

Norman Korowitz
METNY District Chair

PS - "News" is truly a team effort. We appreciate the efforts of Jordana Bickel, Kimberly Bastin, Gila Drazen, Sloane Rosenberg and Yossi Hoffman, who have created, implemented and improved this eNewsletter every step of the way.

What METNY Learned from the Survey:

1.Content - 82.7% of the survey participants either found the content to be very relevant or somewhat relevant:

2. Length and Layout - Most respondents indicated that they read 50-100% of the newsletter each week. In terms of length, we learned that our readers want "News" to be streamlined for easier use. This vital feedback indicates that we may be including too much information in our current layout.

3.Timing - Initially, "News" went out on Friday mornings. It has since moved to Thursday afternoons. The overwhelming majority, however, have opted for Thursdays mornings:

4.The good news about "News" is that its overall satisfaction ranked quite high, with 74.% saying they are either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied.

Next Steps

Moving forward, we are excited to announce that we will redesign METNY's "News You Can Use."

The new and improved redesign will feature:

  • Clean, concise articles
  • Shorter overall length
  • Consistent layout
  • A new section called "District Happenings," which will highlight events around the METNY district
  • "eDelivery" on Thursday mornings

Your feedback was essential in this redesign. We encourage you to keep sharing your comments about "News" and METNY USCJ. We are here to service your kehillah (congregation) and community!

As always, quality content remains our main focus. Stay tuned for the redesigned "News You Can Use" coming soon!

PS - We are already working on our Purim parody "News You Can Lose," and are turning to you for material. Do you have Purim Torah, a Purim Shpiel, or shtick that you want to share with our over 100 congregations in the area? We would love to feature you!
