Harlan In The Shadow of Jew Suss
How much is a director responsible for how others interpret his material? That question is even more resounding when a filmmaker's work was touted by the Nazi Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, as an excellent example of how to demonstrate to the German people that they should hate Jews.
This portrait of famed German director Veit Harlan, who in 1940 made the notorious film "Jew Suss" and then saw the rest of his career derailed by association with that project, is a fascinating and sweeping analysis of how one man's seeming refusal to accept or even acknowledge complicity shaped the rest of his career. Read a full review. The film will be released on DVD on Tuesday, November 23rd.

Abe Fried-Tanzer is an NYC-based fieldworker for KOACH, USCJ's College Outreach Project, as well as the editor of Movies With Abe and TV with Abe.

Shalom from the Admissions Department at JTS.
JTS has many new and exciting projects planned for the 2010-2011 academic year. One of them is the creation of the Experiential Learning Initiative, made possible by a generous grant from the Jim Joseph Foundation.
A program of the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education, the initiative is intended to produce more and better-trained experiential Jewish educators, and will offer both a new MA in Jewish Experiential Education, beginning with the fall 2011 semester, and shorter-term, intensive certification programs. Mark S. Young, who has held leadership and educational positions in various Jewish experiential settings, is the initiative's program coordinator..
Professor Jeff Kress-associate professor of Jewish Education, chair of the Department of Jewish Education, and the initiative's academic director-says, "We are very excited to be launching this new initiative with generous funding from the Jim Joseph Foundation. For our MA degree in Jewish Experiential Education, we are looking for students who have worked in experiential settings, have a solid knowledge of Judaica, and are looking to take the next step in becoming educational leaders who can impact the lives of Jewish learners."
The impetus for both the MA in Jewish Experiential Education and the certificate programs stems from the blossoming of venues and ventures that focus more and more on cultivating inspiring and rich Jewish experiences. Camps, Hillels, and new nonprofit Jewish education organizations, among others, are all seeking excellent, knowledgeable professionals. Trips to Israel have become a rite of passage not only for teens and young adults. Even "formal" educational settings such as day schools and supplemental schools are embracing experiential educational methods, focusing on retreats, Shabbatonim, social action initiatives, and more. The demand for skilled experiential professionals continues to grow, and students of Jewish education will seek the needed training to excel in diverse settings.
