Mid-Year Evaluations: More than a Report Card with Rabbi Charles Savenor, District Director, METNY District USCJ Tuesday, February 16, 2010 - 3:00 p.m. Eastern
Successful synagogues engender partnership with clergy and professional staff. A key component of this relationship is feedback that fosters growth. Staff evaluations provide synagogue leaders with the opportunity to dialogue with their professionals about job performance, examine shared goals and measure success. During this conference call, we will present four approaches to mid-year evaluations that can create an ongoing conversation to enhance the vitality of your synagogue. We hope that representatives from your congregation will participate in this call! Please email your RSVP to Ariella Brody at the Northeast District's Central Office. Once you are registered we will email you a confirmation that includes the call-in number. Please COPY, PASTE, and COMPLETE the following after clicking on the email address below: RSVP to Ariella Brody at neadmin@uscj.org (please cc: Aaron Kischel at kischel@uscj.org when you RSVP)

Campership Grants for New Campers
In the greater New York area, less than 10 percent of the Jewish community's children attend a Jewish summer camp. But synagogues and community centers are working hard to increase that participation rate by cultivating a culture of Jewish camping.
The Campership initiative is supported by UJA-Federation of New York's Commission on Jewish Identity and Renewal (COJIR), the Foundation for Jewish Camp, and the Jewish Communal Fund. The initiative makes it possible for children attending a Jewish camp for the first time to receive $1,000 stipends.
"Camp has proven itself to be a transformational experience, immersing children in Jewish learning, living, and community," says Deborah Joselow, COJIR managing director. "UJA-Federation aspires to make Jewish camping an integral part of every child's Jewish journey."
Campership 2010 applications are available here. Learn more about Campership.

I
Imagine a soldier standing guard. It's dark and silent. Vitali is thinking about his parents, but they are far away in Ukraine. It's Purim and others in the unit are receiving gifts from family, or getting leave to travel home, but this soldier remains alone. Vitali came on aliyah to Israel on his own as a teenager nearly a decade ago and is now serving as a Lone Soldier in the IDF.
But it's not just young people from the former Soviet Union who are far from their families. Every year, dozens of young adults from North America, including those of our own Conservative Movement, make aliyah and join the IDF. They too are part of the 2,500 Lone Soldiers from around the Diaspora now serving in the IDF, who are alone on Purim.
This year, the annual Purim Connection, organized by the American Zionist Movement and its affiliates including MERCAZ USA, the Zionist arm of the Conservative Movement, is seeking to touch these Lone Soldiers and other young Israelis living in stressful situations and bring them a little "light and gladness" this Purim in fulfillment of the Biblical verse "to observe them as days of feasting and merrymaking and as an occasion for sending gifts to one another". (Esther 9:22)
This year, contributions from members and friends of MERCAZ USA will be directed towards purchasing Purim gift baskets to be distributed by the Outreach Project for IDF Lone Soldiers, organized by the Masorti Congregation Moreshet Yisrael in Jerusalem, and the Neve Hanna Children's Village in Kiryat Gat.
Wouldn't you like to do something special this Purim? We invite you to make a donation to help cover the cost of traditional mishloach manot Purim baskets filled with sweets and other gift items. Even a small donation will help a young child or a lonely soldier feel cared for and remembered.
Please click here for the special MERCAZ Purim Connection page. Scroll down to the contribution categories. Once you have made you selection and added an amount to your "shopping cart", you may either pay online with a credit card or print out a form and mail in your check to the American Zionist Movement.
Your mishloach manot gift will tell an Israeli soldier or child that you care. It's a gesture that will long be remembered. But the deadline is coming up quickly. For those who wish to send personal greetings, letters received by February 12th will be included in a soldier's package. We ask that donations be received no later than February 19, 2010. Please don't delay!
We thank you; and Vitali, his fellow lone soldiers and all of Israel thanks you too.
Janet Tobin, Co-Chair, AZM Purim Connection Dr. Stephen S. Wolnek, President, MERCAZ USA

The Library Open House-Back by Popular Demand for Purim
You are cordially invited to join the staff of The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on the fifth floor of The Library for another exciting Open House.
As we celebrate Purim, you will have the opportunity to sample a broad selection of rare and unique materials from The Library's magnificent Special Collections that relate to this lively holiday.
On view will be items spanning the eleventh to the twenty-first centuries-manuscripts, rare books, broadsides, and archival material, as well as our digital collections. The Open House will showcase our extensive collection of megillot (scrolls), many of them elaborately decorated. A well-known Judaica artist, David Wander (a contemporary American tonalist known for his serene but intensely colored landscapes), will be on hand to discuss the Purim megillah that he created, a work influenced by his engagement with traditional Jewish texts and commentaries.
All guests are invited to attend a panel discussion immediately following the Open House from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. with Dr. Shira Epstein, assistant professor of Jewish Education at the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education of JTS; artist David Wander; and Dr. David Kraemer, the Joseph J. and Dora Abbell Librarian and professor of Talmud and Rabbinics, JTS. The discussion will focus on how the primary materials of Jewish study can transform both the teaching and the learning experiences of students.
We look forward to seeing you on February 23.
Registration is required for this event, so please sign up. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Hector Guzman at heguzman@jtsa.edu.
The Library is located at JTS, 3080 Broadway (at 122nd Street), New York City, accessible by the 1 train and M4 and M104 buses. Please arrive early; photo ID is required.
