                                               USCJ Haiti Relief Report

When Haiti was devastated by earthquake, members of our affiliated shuls turned to us as they searched for ways to help the survivors. Donations have poured in. We are proud to report that as of Wednesday, January 27, we have collected $109,216. $80,268 has been donated on line, and approximately $28,950 in checks has come in the mail.

We serve merely as a funnel for funds. We collect money through Razoo, a service that charges no fees, and we pass on every cent we receive to organizations that know how to spend it most efficiently and effectively. So far, we have given $70,000 to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and asked the JDC to send those funds to the Israel Trauma Coalition For Response and Preparedness. (This is the group that brought ZAKA and theIDF to Haiti.)

Because the situation in Haiti has changed from rescue to more long-term recovery efforts, we, like other groups, are waiting for recommendations that the JDC will issue, based on requests made through the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief. As soon as we know where the funds that have been entrusted to us can do the most good, we will dispatch them there.

Mid-Year Evaluations:

More than a Report Card

with Rabbi Charles Savenor

District Director, METNY District USCJ

Wednesday, February 16, 2010

3:00 p.m. Eastern

Successful synagogues engender partnership with clergy and professional staff. A key component of this relationship is feedback that fosters growth. Staff evaluations provide synagogue leaders with the opportunity to dialogue with their professionals about job performance, examine shared goals and measure success. During this conference call, we will present four approaches to mid-year evaluations that can create an ongoing conversation to enhance the vitality of your synagogue.

Following President Obama's State of the Union address and the start of the new congressional year, JTA asked Jewish organizations operating in Washington the following questions: "What do you hope the administration and Congress will achieve this year, and what advice would you offer them to make it happen?"

Here's the article and USCJ's response:

http://jta.org/news/article/2010/02/01/1010421/the-jewish-agenda-in-washington-for-2009

Jewish history offers numerous examples of how leaders who disagree on critical issues can work together for the benefit of the community. Our history also shows the sometimes disastrous consequences when they do not. We would like to see a return to civility and collaboration in political discourse and Congressional deliberations. From a new spirit of collaboration, progress can be made on the critical issues of our moment: immigration reform, economic stability, fixing our health care system, environmental action and enhancing opportunity for all. As he focuses on the critical issues of jobs and economic recovery, we ask President Obama to continue the process of enhancing America's position in the world so that our country can help bring a secure peace to Israel and contain the threat from Iran.

Yasher Koach to METNY USY

This Shabbat METNY USY will have 317 USYers and Kadimaniks at the Mid-Winter Kallah in Suffern, NY.  During the weekend where we will honor our Chapter Presidents and HERJC USY, the International Chapter of the Year.

Yasher Koach to our youth leadership for all of their hard work in making this program a success: Risa Gul of the Temple Beth El, Bellmore and East Meadow Jewish Center USY Chapter and Andrew Plaut of the Hudson Valley USY Chapter.

How to Apply for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program

Synagogues in the United States can apply for grants of up to $75,000 to upgrade their security measures. Find out about the grant, equipment purchases and learn how to develop a successful grant application at a webinar on Applying for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program.

Overview:
Nonprofit Security Grant Program FY 2010

Eligible applicants will be able to apply for up to $75,000 to bolster their physical security and conduct preparedness training. There is an optional cost share (cash or in-kind), which could be applicable where an applicant plans eligible improvements that exceed the maximum grant amount. An applicant's willingness to contribute to a cost share will NOT impact the application scores or allocations. (In past years grantees were required to fund 25% of the project).

 Kol Dichfin - Passover 2010/5770

All Who Are Hungry, Let Them Come and Eat

PROGRAM BACKGROUND
Pesach is approaching, and once again USCJ's Project Reconnect and NAASE are working together to serve college students and unaffiliated young adults.  Last year, 300 synagogues across the Conservative movement, in North America, Israel, and around the world, participated in Come Home for the (High) Holidays and Kol Dichfin (Passover).

ACTION REQUESTED
We ask that you that you open your community seder (if you have one) to those who have no place to go and need an invitation and/or help find congregants willing to host people at their seders

Please take a moment to visit:
http://www.projectreconnect.org/outreach/program?program_id=5

Previous Participants: Please verify that your information (contact name, email address, website, 1st/2nd seder offerings, and home hospitality information) is correct.  IMPORTANT: Please email reconnect@uscj.org to verify that your information is correct and confirm your participation for 2010.   Information update requests can be sent to the same email address.

New Participants: (please check to make sure your synagogue is not listed before submitting new information) Click the link at the top of the page to add your synagogue.  If you need help, please email
reconnect@uscj.org.

Please note, this link is not yet public, as we are currently asking synagogues to update their information at this time. This link will go live in the next 4-5 weeks.

FOLLOW-UP
We urge you to keep a list of the visitors who come to you through Kol Dichfin. Please send them information about your synagogue's activities, classes, and events. When people are ready to affiliate, they go where they feel comfortable - we want that to be your synagogue.

With your ongoing support, if we all pay attention to the words of the Haggadah when it says "Kol Dichfin.... All who are hungry, let them come and eat" we will continue to bring pride to our movement and to ourselves as Jews.

Project Reconnect is the official programming alumni association of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. So far more than 20,000 people have registered, and the list grows constantly. Your participation in this necessary and important initiative will help to reinforce us as the movement with neshama.

In planning for this year's Passover issue, The Jewish Week Newspaper is  seeking input from the wider Jewish community asking several Jewish organizations if they can spread the word among their membership -- especially online -- to send in their short vignettes in answer to one question:

What was the most meaningful or interesting or insightful question you heard or asked at a seder? How was the question answered, how did it answer the question, and how did the answer affect you or change your understanding?

Please contact Steve Lipman at the New York Jewish Week:
