Welcome to the Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County Newsletter

It's officially summer, I hope you are enjoying the summer as much as our girls! The first two weeks proved to be successful with close to 200 girls attending camp daily. Girls are already immersed in our collaborative learning with NASA, creating one of kind works of art and making new friends. Next week, girls will choose their summer jobs in MicroSociety which is always an exciting process.  We welcome our newest Dream Harbor business, The Ocean Breeze Salon!

We are thrilled to have 10 of our teen summer volunteers with us this summer. You will be hearing their alumni stories over the next two months. Once you hear their accomplishments, there will be no doubt  that the work we do here at Girls Inc. is having an impact. With that being said, we want to formally introduce our newest co-editor of the monthly newsletter, Jillian Nixon.

You may remember her as the 2011 Girls Inc. "Girl of the Year." She has been actively involved with the program for about six years, as a member and volunteer. This summer, she will be mentoring a girl and helping publish the newsletter. We are thrilled to have her back with us and thrilled she wants to share stories of our alumni and staff with you.

So Summer 2012, here we come! Make sure to like us on Facebook, and check out what's going on daily. We would love to have you see the programs in action so feel free to stop by and be sure to ready to be impressed!

 Meet The Girls Inc. Staff!

   Meet Ms. Marisa!

Jillian Nixon and Marisa Monroe

This bubbly staff member is our program director, but we like to call her the "happiness director." She always has a smile on her face, and something positive to say. She tells us "It's easy to be happy, when you love your job, and every day is a joy." Ms. Marisa, isn't just a happy go-lucky spirit, she is also very smart too. She graduated from USF with a masters degree in history, and a teaching certificate in secondary education. When asked what makes you strong, smart and bold, Ms Marisa replied with "What doesn't make me strong, smart and bold?" For our last question, we asked; what is your favorite thing about Girls Inc, she told us, "I love the girls, because they teach me new things every day, and I love how they aren't afraid to be individuals, and stand out." We loved that answer especially, because that's what we teach here, to be fearless, and to be strong, smart and bold.

Ms. Peggy is an artistically talented staff member with an art education, leaving her perfectly matched to work in the art studio at Girls Inc, creatively named "Color My World." She tells us that she works at Girls Inc. because "She likes having an influence on younger generations and she likes to be around younger people." Ms. Peggy told us "The two things that make me strong smart and bold, are my spiritual beliefs and my positive outlook on life." We also asked her, what her favorite thing about Girls Inc. was, it was hard for her to decide, but she told us; "I love being able to be involved in the lives of younger girls." This summer Ms. Peggy would love your help with art projects and field trips to expand the girls knowledge of art. Let us know if you would like to help!

Welcome back alumni!

Meet Shaquira Lawson, a fifteen year old girl attending Booker High School. She has been involved with Girls Incorperated as a member for about four years, and now she has come back as a volunteer this summer!  Shaquira is a very ambitious girl, and when we asked her what drives her, she told us "Girls Inc. really taught me to set goals for myself." She also told us "Girls Inc. made me a more confident person, especially with making friends, I used to be shy, but Girls Inc. pulled me out of my shell, and I am so thankful for that." Shaquira is a busy girl here, she volunteers in almost every program, but her favorite is working in the kitchen (Who wouldn't love being in the kitchen?) and helping in the office with admin. One day, Shaquira wishes to either be, an oceanographer or work in business marketing. How amazing is that? We are so happy to have you back Shaquira, thanks for returning to the family!

Micro-Society News

Most of you know what Dream Harbor is, but for the ones who don't... Dream Harbor is the city within Girls Inc. that the girls run.  We have several businesses within Dream Harbor and we asked the girls what they were currently working on this summer.

e that keeps you in style is called "Shabby Chic Boutique" and is facilitated by Ms. Lindsay A.K.A the fashionista, they are making very trendy duct tape bracelets, and puzzle piece hair barrettes. "Color My World" aided by Ms. Peggy, is the place to go for anything artsy. They are making mermaid art, which is all underwater themed things, like mobiles with fish, candle sticks with shells, and coloring pictures of mermaids. "Making Rounds" This Summer

Sixteen middle school girls participated in this year's "Making Rounds" healthcare career camp in North Port sponsored by Gulfcoast South AHEC. Camp participantsmakingrounds explored many of the over 300 careers available in the healthcare industry. Girls got hands-on with emergency medical equipment when EMTs and paramedics from the North Port Fire Department visited the camp in their emergency vehicle. They also learned about entrepreneurship options available from local pharmacy owners and industry specialists. In addition, participants toured behind the scenes at Englewood Community Hospital, interviewing many women and professionals working in the field and discovering the technology used in patient care from "smart" patient beds to telemetry to nuclear radiology. Then the participants identified personal strengths, values and dreams and matched them with healthcare careers. To see photos of these amazing girls in action, visit the "Girls Only" section of our website.
